North Carolina in general and Charlotte specifically is a hotbed for Girl's prep basketball. This was on full display last February when Charlotte hosted the Gatorade Jr. NBA's All-Star Invitational for the area's Boy's and Girl's Middle School teams. Ridge Road took home the crown in the Girl's division when they capped off a perfect 20-0 season with a 53-39 victory over Providence Day School in the Championship game That tournament was the appetizer for what promises to be an incredible main course of a 2019-2020 regular season which is scheduled to tip in less than a month. Here is a quick preview of some of the top female talent in the Charlotte Metropolitan area from the classes of 2020 to 2022, in what we call "5 To Watch".
1. Nevaeh Brown - G - 5'8" (2020) - Mallard Creek - After leading Davidson Day School to the North Carolina 2A State Championship last year, Brown, a Wake Forest commit, takes a step up in competition as she transfers to 4A Mallard Creek in hopes of leading an otherwise young Mavericks club back to prominence. A big time athlete, it will be interesting to see if her game will translate against the bigger, stronger, faster opponents she will encounter playing with the perennial 4A power.
2. Nevaeh Caldwell - G - 5'7" (2022) - Hopewell - The ultra - explosive Caldwell averaged 10 points 4 assists and 5 rebounds last year. With another year of experience and the natural maturing process, she is a likely candidate for a breakout season when Hopewell opens their season on November 19 against Harding University High.
3. Kennedy Calhoun - G - 5'5" (2021) - Hickory Ridge - The whippet quick point guard made the leap last season by upping her scoring average from 4.6 PPG her freshman year to 12.5 PPG as a sophomore. With high flying teammate Nia Daniel now a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill, look for Calhoun to possibly be a 20 point per game scorer in 2019-2020.
4. Mallorie Haines - G/F - 5'10" (2021) - Davidson Day - The sharpshooting Haines will now be in the lead role as Davidson Day School attempts to defend its 2A State Championship. The 2019 All-State player is a knockdown shooter who has improved her quickness and athleticism while being trained by formal Tar Heel star and NBA player Jeff McInnis.
5. Jessica Timmons - G/F - 5'8" (2021) - North Mecklenburg - The athletic wing will lead a loaded Vikings squad that figures to challenge Vance and Mallard Creek for I - Meck 4A - supremacy. Already a 1000 point career scorer, this player is the odds on favorite for area Player of the Year.
