At 5’5, Whitcomb is a talented point guard who brings a big motor and a lot of intensity to the floor, diving on the floor for loose balls or stepping to take a key charge. She enjoys playing the game at a fast pace, looks to advance the ball up the floor and can run the point, play off the ball and looks to apply her basketball IQ to the game.
Whitcomb is coming off a strong junior season for the Lady Raiders as she averaged 12.7 points, 2.5 steals and 2.4 assists per game and was named honorable mention all-state for her efforts. She says the program is looking forward to taking a big step in 2019-20 after a tough season a year ago.
“My expectations for this upcoming season are to become closer as a whole and to make the most of practices to get better everyday,” she says. “Overall work as a family to make it farther than previous years.”
Whitcomb says she gained a lot of confidence throughout the offseason playing for the Lady Prospects, learning how to play either guard spot at a high level.
“Summer ball this year pushed me to know the pace of the game, increase my basketball IQ, and learn the game from all positions,” she says. “I had a great coach this summer that loved pushing the ball but also knowing the right time to take a step back and slow down to set up a play. I played a lot of a 1 and 2 guard and was able to see the court from different perspectives. Whereas in the previous years I have mostly been primarily a point guard.
“I also was able to gain a lot of self confidence this summer. The other girls on my team were supper accepting and were always there to pick each other up.”
Whitcomb says her grandfather has had the biggest influence on her basketball career to date before his passing.
“He was the most competitive person I knew. Sadly he passed away a few years ago,” she says. “He was inducted into his college’s hall of fame and hearing all of the stories about his time on the court really pushed me to want to dedicate my time to basketball. Before he passed he made it his priority to have a basketball court put in our backyard for my brother and I to practice.”
A fan of Steph Curry, Whitcomb says she appreciates the way he carries himself on the floor.
“His confidence and composure is what caught my eye. He can miss however many shots and still be ready to shoot the next without hesitating,” she said. “I used to get in my head really bad when id mess up but watching steph and having a coach that believes in me and trusts me has brought me a long way.”
Whitcomb has drawn interest from Cornell, Johnson County, Kansas City CC, Dominican University, and Buena Vista University.
