As we enter the 2019/2020 high school basketball season in Kansas. Prep Hoops will preview some of the Kansas City Area high schools. These preview articles will give you details on key players, season expectations and more.
In this article, we look at St. James Academy Lady Thunder, a member of the EKL conference. Coming off a below .500 season in 2018-2019 they will look to improve in 2019-20. Coach O’Malley will be in her 3rd year as head coach and looking to get her girls back to competing at a high level.
Players to watch
Claire Worthington, Guard, Junior, (2021)
Claire is a returning starter and led the Lady Thunder in scoring a year ago. A very high IQ player with great vision and good ball handling skills. An elite level shooter, with a quick release. In 2018-19 Worthington shot an amazing 50% from the beyond the arc. In a hand full of games she dropped 6 or more 3 pointers last season, which shows her consistency and ability to be an elite level shooter. The 5’7 guard is a member of KC Dream Basketball grassroots program, where she spent the summer competing against high level competition around the country. These year she will look to help lead St. James as they look to increase their win total from last year.
Faith Hawthrone, Forward, Junior, (2021) #2 Ranked in our PGH Kansas Class of 2021
The prefect definition of a stretch four. Faith is a high IQ athlete that has the size, strength and ability to battle down low on the block. Her versatility allows her to put it on the floor and knock down the jump shot with consistency. The 6’1 transfer is coming off a state championship at Bishop Miege a year ago and looks to be a key piece for the Thunder this year. After a busy summer with KC Lady Run GMC grassroots program, Hawthorne will definitely help St. James in 2019-20.
The Lady Thunder has a great group of returning players and some new freshmen that should help Coach O’Malley’s program be able to compete in a loaded EKL.
Upcoming Games
St. James opens the season against December 5th at Wyandotte High School against the Bulldogs.
