Continue ReadingIt is no secret that Mead’s girls basketball program has struggled the last couple years. They’ve been young, inexperienced and inconsistent. So far this season, there has been hints of that youthfulness and inconsistency, but a lot more good things to build off of game by game. In their first GSL matchup with Shadle Park, Mead kept their early season momentum rolling and improved to 5-0 on the season after a 72-41 victory. After reviewing my notes, I have some takeaways and key questions that will be answered here very soon.
Takeaways:
1) 2020 5’8 PG Joelnell Momberg is a heck of a passer. *Feature image
The Montana signee had some eye opening passes at different points during the game that made people look around in amazement. She sees the floor so well and it appears to come so naturally. She is a dual threat, because she can also score the ball, posting 18 points on the night. One thing that I like about her passing is her ability to throw it with either hand. This really allows her to make passes through tight seems and awkward angles. An impressive performance all around for the future Montana player.
2) 2021 5’8 PG Izzy Boring is really SOLID.
Shadle Park picked up a transfer this season in Izzy Boring and she has been posting good number across the board this season, despite Shadle Park’s struggles as a team. She finished with 16 points and a half dozen assists tonight, breaking Mead’s press with the pass many times throughout the game. Izzy does a little bit of everything on the floor and is the clear leader for Shadle Park. A player to keep an eye on.
Questions that need to be answered:
1) Can Mead stay mentally focused versus top teams?
As mentioned before, Mead has a lot of youth in the program. 2022’s Olivia Moore, Alicia Suggs, Haley Burns and Kyla Momberg are all playing major minutes. At times, the sloppy or late passes and missed assignments hurt, but then there are some moments when they are clicking and locked in mentally to where it looks like they can compete with anyone. Which team will show up in their next game and can they maintain focus throughout? This will be answered on Saturday when they play Mt. Spokane in a home rivalry game.
2) Who will really step up versus Mt. Spokane?
It will take a team effort versus Mt. Spokane and it cannot just be the Joelnell Momberg show. Alicia Suggs, Olivia Moore and Kyla Momberg will have to be solid at the least. Contributions from quickly improving 6’0 Haley Burns would be huge inside. Someone is going to have to get big stops at key moments and make big shots during Mt. Spokane’s runs.
