Focusing on players in Northeast Ohio, today we took at a look at sophomores. The class of 2022 finally has a large enough body of work for us to make some determinations about them. Here are 5 relatively unknown kids who people need to pay closer attention to.
Catara DeJarnette – Kenston
Catara (pictured above: photo credit – News Herald) is an athletic guard who can initiate the offense or be the primary scorer off of the ball. She is a good distributor who makes heady plays and also shoots a high percentage from the field. She is averaging 18 points and 4 assists per night for her sophomore campaign. She had 25 points in the season-opener against Berea-Midpark.
Mia Weaver – Dalton
Dalton’s backcourt of Makenna Geiser (Ashland U commit) and Camille Beatty gets most of the headlines, but it has been Weaver who has burst onto the scene as a 10th grader. She looked impressive in early season victories against lesser opponents, but it was her 18 points and solid defense and rebounding against Chippewa that caught our eye. Weaver is dynamic in transition and she seems to always be in the right spots – playing alongside those experienced guards on her team.
Brook Stookey – Tuslaw
Tuslaw is one of Northeast Ohio’s biggest surprises this winter. They enter Christmas with a 6-2 overall record and also share 1st place in the PAC with CVCA and Northwest. Wins over Trinity, Fairland, Northwest and Waynedale have impressed, as has the play of sophomore post Brook Stookey. Stookey is strong and physical inside, where she averages a double-double and has provided the first post presence for the Mustangs since the graduation of the Sales sisters.
Alyssa Ziehler – Green
An injury to 6’3 post Marissa Berlin left Green searching for answers in the post during the early stages of the season. Alyssa has helped ease some of those concerns. She is an athletic 3/4 prospect who is averaging 15.8 points and just a tad over 10 rebounds a night for the Bulldogs, who are young and have no easy games in the Federal League. Ziehler is a leaper with good post moves and a high motor – the sky is the limit for her.
Sarah Brown – Beachwood
Brown is one of the leading rebounders in the state of Ohio. Her understanding of angles allows her to rebound at an elite level. She enters 2020 averaging over 18 caroms a night, to go with her 12 points. At 6’1, there are not many girls as long as Sarah and she certainly uses that length well.
