Class 2A: Day 1 Standouts
The opening round — and only round — of the Kansas 2A state championships opened on Wednesday with quarterfinal play at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
Spearville defeated St. Mary’s Colgan (55-41); Trego got past Bennington (45-31); Garden Plain defeated Sterling (54-48); and Valley Heights defeated Wabaunsee (51-45).
On Thursday, KSHSAA announced the remaining state tournament games would not be played. Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several players who stood out throughout the day.
Kaitlin Crossland, 2023, St Mary’s-Colgan
The leading scorer for her team against Spearville and a nice player overall. Crossland can make plays as a defender inside and out and runs the floor well and can connect after the catch or through some creativity of her own. She had 10 points in the first half of the matchup and 16 points total. A player to keep your eyes on moving forward.
[player_tooltip player_id="121722" first="Ehlaina" last="Hartman"], F, 2020, Spearville
A seasoned player who can fight through contact and score in a hurry. She is a resilient player and has a strong shooting percentage and a good feel for inside play. Hartman is a strong defender as well who can get a hand on the ball. That said, she’s a scorer who can put up big numbers and lead her team both voally and by example. Hartman led all scores at half with 13 points and finished with a game high 25 points.
Kennedy Horacek, 5’4, G, 2020, Garden Plain
Horacek played her heart out and was looking to lead by example any way she could. The Garden Plain senior took chances on offense and was mobile and calm with the ball. She was lighting things up from three-point range and also had an impressive game from the free throw line. She led scoring for Garden Plain with 18 points. She shot 50 percent from 3-point range (hitting two) and made 8-9 free throw attempts. She also had a steal and a rebound. A nice end to her career from a solid overall player.
Lil Shubert, 5’8, 2021, Trego
Shubert is a two-way player who can see time inside and on the perimeter. SHe is a solid player overall and works well switching out on opponents rebounding and making plays in half court settings. Also a pure scorer who can create and catch-and-score. She led all scorers in Trego’s win over Bennington with 13 points.
Emma Yungberg, 5’11, F, 2022, Valley Heights
A dominant player for Valley Heights who brings height, length and the ability to make plays as a defensive player and a lead scorer. She is aggressive around the basket and uses her height to her advantage as she scores over shorter players and can overpower players around size. She led all scorers in the game with 17 points. Still a young player but one who shows a lot of promise and a knack for big moments.
