The Kansas 4A state championships were short lived in Kansas as the Kansas High School Activities Association announced on Thursday the remaining state tournament games will not be played following a single quarterfinal round of play.
Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several players who stood out at the event, with a look here at several senior guards.
To recap the quarterfinal scores, Nickerson beats Buhler, 63-36; KC Piper 63 got past Baldwin 48; Clay Center Community defeated Eudora, 47-42; and Bishop Miege defeated Chapman 60-45.
Grace Banes, 5’7, G, 2020, Piper
Banes was able to find her rhythm early from distance and she had no intention of taking her foot off the accelerator. She looked to shoot in transition and also in half-court settings. Banes is quick and creates but is good at shooting quickly after the catch. She led scoring in Piper’s win over Balwin with 20 points hitting 6-7 from 3-point range. Banes also played incredible defense.
[player_tooltip player_id="154230" first="Clara" last="Edwards"], 6’0, F, 2021, Clay Center
A terrific two-way player who can run things inside and stretch the floor at times. She’s aggressive inside and out and looks to make plays wherever she can. Edwards is long and strong and has good hops and is great at applying pressure as a defender. Also someone with good handles and vision. A skilled player who can score in bunches and contribute off the ball. Edwards scored a game-high 25 points and added eight rebounds. Edwards was 8-12 from the field and hit 8-9 from the free throw line.
[player_tooltip player_id="121787" first="Reagan" last="Hiebert"], G, 2020, Eudora
A nice guard for Eudora who can score in bunches, play with and without the ball and make an impact from 3-point range. She can create some but she’s great at catching and shooting and moving off screens and playing strong on defense and looking to contest shots. Hiebert led scoring for Eudora with 22 points on 6-8 from 3-point range.
[player_tooltip player_id="93974" first="Emajin" last="McCallop"], G, 2022, Bishop Miege
An athletic two-way standout who made a splash as a ball defender, primary ball handler and a scoring option. McCallop has a high ceiling and a lot of potential and her athleticism and zip makes her a difficult player to slow down. McCallop also has terrific vision and can see plays one both ends of the floor before they happen. She can find her teammates with the ball and looks to jump passing lanes and score in transition. McCallop finished the win over Chapman with 20 points and five assists.
Morgan Stout, 6’2, F, 2020, Nickerson
Stout set a tone for Nickerson leading the way with points, rebounds and blocked shots. She’s an athletic forward who can run the floor, protect the basket at a high level and score through contact in a variety of ways. She plays well inside and can handle herself on the peiter and is capable of making athletic plays through the air. Stout finished the game against Buhler with 23 points, eight rebounds and an impressive six blocked shots. Stout understands her role and goes beyond what’s expected of her.
