Prep Girls Hoops hosted its first ever Kansas Kickoff this past weekend at Andover's Farha YMCA. Despite it being the first event of summer ball for the majority of the teams competing the caliber of play was consistently strong across the divisions. Take a look at the five division prospects who I have selected to the event's 17U first team. Follow that up with a review of the 17U second team.

Against the strongest of defenders Halitzka showed composure under pressure and headiness with handles to create opportunities for herself and her teammates. While not the prettiest of releases Halitzka proved an ability to knock down perimeter shots including off the step-back. Nearly every on-ball defender she showed an ability to set them up and beat them off the dribble. Halitzka has a solid frame and used her headiness to make quality defensive decisions as well.

Hilt's ferociousness defensively had me thinking of her as an absolute wolverine. In the half- and full-court event the best ball handlers could not shake her. She could turn opponents into absolute turnover machines. She was not all about defense though. She attacked the basket with speed and showed a swiftly released three point shot.

The power forward showed an advanced feel for where defenders are, exploiting defensive contact to gain a step. Her size and nose for the hoop led to strong finishes. Holycross showed solid handles working in the mid-range and an ability to create short jumpers. She transitioned well and used her frame to challenge opposing inside work.

Hoskins has legitimate size with good bounce on her short jumper. She will also step out and bury the three ball. Most impressive was the ball skills she showed off bringing up the ball against full-court pressure. The center is nowhere near her ceiling.

Swift wrapped up her event by exploding for 23 points against a very solid NWA 17U team. She showed good speed, strong hops and athleticism on finishes at speed. Defensively her length and lateral quickness enabled her to defend multiple positions that, off possession changes, turned into transition opportunities due to being able to out-run her opponents. Listed in PGH as a shooting guard I see her game more suited to the small forward spot.
