There’s been some chatter about the Miss Basketball award this year. Whether it’s the voting process, the number of finalists, or something different, it has all been up for debate. Well, I’m going to show you what would happen if I was in charge.

FINALISTS

First of all, I’ll invite all the finalists I want. Why? Because these girls deserve it and because I can. Let’s start with these 15. If I’m missing someone, I’d add them too. No limit on the number of young athletes that are recognized for greatness. If they deserve it, they’re there.
[player_tooltip player_id="126233" first="Jasmine" last="Clerkley"] (PF, Okemos)
After 4 years of dominating the paint, Clerkley belongs.
[player_tooltip player_id="23762" first="Carlee" last="Crabtree"] (SF, Coldwater)
Crabtree is an elite wing in Michigan. She should be recognized as such.
[player_tooltip player_id="2478" first="Gabrielle" last="Elliott"] (SF, Detroit Edison)
Elliott is a premier talent nationally, so she’s a definite finalist.
[player_tooltip player_id="23755" first="Sophie" last="Dziekan"] (C, Brighton)
Dziekan has had a tremendous senior campaign, proving to be the best of the best among centers.
[player_tooltip player_id="23751" first="Cameron" last="Grant"] (PF, Macomb Dakota)
Grant is a top notch workhorse and leader that needs to be a finalist.
[player_tooltip player_id="23750" first="Mckenzie" last="Lewis"] (PG, Williamston)
Lewis is a skilled floor general that is worthy of being named a finalist.
[player_tooltip player_id="126235" first="Cheyenne" last="McEvans"] (CG, Southfield A&T)
McEvans is one of the most skilled athletes in Michigan and filled the stat sheet up all season.
[player_tooltip player_id="126236" first="Aaliyah" last="McQueen"] (SF, Flint Carman-Ainsworth)
McQueen is an elite prospect that needs to have a seat at the table.
[player_tooltip player_id="2522" first="Hadley" last="Miller"] (SF, Three Rivers)
Miller has given and sacrificed to play at an elite level for 4 years. The game should be giving back to her.
[player_tooltip player_id="23749" first="Aaliyah" last="Nye"] (SF, East Lansing)
Nye is an obvious choice. She’s a star that puts up star numbers.
[player_tooltip player_id="2521" first="Lauren" last="Ross"] (PG, Muskegon Reeths-Puffer)
Ross had a Miss basketball type of season. She should have a place among the best.
[player_tooltip player_id="23770" first="Gabi" last="Saxman"] (PG, Schoolcraft)
Saxman is a true floor leader that flies a bit under the radar. The radar should find her as a finalist.
[player_tooltip player_id="23748" first="Whitney" last="Sollom"] (PF, Hartland)
Sollom is a premier next level talent and a walking double-double. She’s one of the greats.
[player_tooltip player_id="126239" first="Hannah" last="Spitzley"] (SF, Pewamo-Westphalia)
Spitzley is a winner and makes her teammates better. Athletes should be rewarded for being high level players and winners.
[player_tooltip player_id="126240" first="Madison" last="Voelker"] (SF, Goodrich)
Voelker puts up numbers and is a top notch scorer. She should be considered among the best.

Honorable Mentions

I get it, we need to keep the award in a special light and some may think that too many finalists waters it down. Add another step at the ceremony. Of all the finalists attending name 2 Honorable Mentions. Here’s mine:
[player_tooltip player_id="23749" first="Aaliyah" last="Nye"]
[player_tooltip player_id="23748" first="Whitney" last="Sollom"]

The Winner

My Miss Basketball this season:
[player_tooltip player_id="2478" first="Gabrielle" last="Elliott"]
First of all, there is so much great senior talent this year and it was very touch to choose. I used a really simple equation for this: Elite national talent + Excellent stats + Wins + State championships = Miss Basketball. [player_tooltip player_id="2478" first="Gabrielle" last="Elliott"] is a special player and an athlete that Michigan can take great pride in.
