When it comes to the Small Forward position in the Class of 2023, there is a little bit of everything for college recruiters to consider. There are a variety of Division-I prospects, some tremendous small college prospects, athletes, wing shooters, point forwards, power wings, and combo forwards to consider. Whatever colleges need, I feel like Indiana can provide in this class. Below is a look at the top ten small forward prospects in Indiana’s Class of 2023, with additional comments to follow.

One name you’ll find familiar on this list is Layden. While older sister Madison (2020 Purdue commit) is headed off to college, McKenna Layden McKenna Layden 6'2" | SF Northwestern | 2023 State IN of Northwestern still has three more seasons of high school basketball remaining, and she’ll be out to prove herself as a leader with so much production graduating for the Tigers in 2020. McKenna is built a little thinner than her sister, but she is longer, and she has a chance to eventually be taller. She still possesses some ball skill, she’s an accurate shooter with her feet set, but out of necessity, she has played more on the interior as a youngster. Look for that to change over time, as she develops into more of a point forward role in the future.
This class has several “unknown” talents, and Renna Schwieterman Renna Schwieterman 6'0" | SF Jay County | 2023 State IN of Jay County tops the list. She has a solid, wiry strong frame, she’s a good North/South athlete, she has actually grown a couple of inches since I saw her in July, and with an older brother who is in the neighborhood of 6-8, she could still move past the 6-0 mark at some point. Renna is very skilled on the perimeter as well, and she has already earned a Division-I Mid-American Conference offer. Hannah Lach Hannah Lach 5'10" | SF Carmel | 2023 State IN of Carmel is another wing who, despite playing Varsity at Carmel this year, is still somewhat unknown. She too has a solid frame, good all-around athleticism, but she is a very cerebral kid with a motor and nice touch from the perimeter. If you are a fan of Center Grove’s Mary Wilson Mary Wilson 5'10" | SF Center Grove | 2021 State IN (2021), you’ll like Hannah’s game.
Elkhart Central’s MaKaya Porter MaKaya Porter 5'11" | PF Mishawaka Marian | 2023 State IN really stepped up as a Freshman, and in a much-needed way. She is a strong, physical athlete who plays with a great motor. She can battle inside, rebound, and defend the post, but she can also handle it in transition and make plays around the perimeter. She averaged 20.5 points and 6.8 rebounds as a Varsity Freshman. I’m also very intrigued by Cascade’s Sydney Warran Sydney Warran 6'0" | SF Cascade | 2023 State IN . She has length, fluidity, and ball skill, plus she’s still growing. She’s pushing 6-0 now, but she was closer to 5-9 when I saw her last Spring. She’ll be a wait-and-see kid because of physical growth, but if she maintains her perimeter skill when she’s done growing, she could be a legitimate Division-I prospect long-term. While there are only ten girls listed above, there are many more you’ll be hearing about in the coming seasons, as the Class of 2023 is deep with talent.
