To be a great shooter you have to have certain characteristics: a great shooting form and technique, the ability to knock down open shots with regularity and frequency, a shooters mentality that simply means you always believe the next shot is going in and finally you have confidence in your shooting ability that never fades. These are factors I use to separate the good shooters from the true shooters and these players on this list are some of the true shooters on the NC high school scene.
Lucy Leen, Leesville Road High School, Raleigh NC
Lucy has worked to become a premiere shooter and all her work has paid off. She has played a lot of games for Leesville including lots of minutes as a freshman. It was then that she began to understand the importance of being a good shooter and really put in the extra time to improve her shooting skills. As she matured as a player her shooting skills and range improved and now she has to be considered one of the best shooters in NC. She makes open shots with that accuracy and regularity that true shooters should have, she looks for her shot moves extremely well without the ball to set herself up for open shots. Her coach describes her as a very, very good shooter and says “If she shoots it’s probably going in.” Her shooting also saw her earn 1st team All-Cap 7 honors as well as 3rd team All 5th District team. She is a knockdown shooter that also has the ball-handling ability to dribble herself into a good shot and this makes her a dual-threat and is a skill that will bode well for her as she takes her shooting skills to Rollins College next year.
Regan Kargo, Northwest Guildford High School, Greensboro, NC
One of the most dependable big-time shooters in NC Regan has been taking and making big shots for Northwest Guilford throughout her career. Her form and technique are textbook-like and that makes her shot repeatable which enables her to shoot at a high percentage and make a lot of shots. Being a senior and haven played in many big-time games and state championship games she knows how to get her shot off against a variety of opponents, how to move and get open and has built the confidence she has that when she shoots she makes. She made 72 3point shots this season and shot at a 50% clip from the field which is remarkable for a guard, these stats are made even more impressive when she does not play a lot of minutes due to the success of her team and the margin of victory of some of their games which means she spent a lot of time off the court. Her long list of honors including All-Conference, All-Area and Triad All-Star to name a few shows others recognized her special skill set. She has excellent size at 5’9” to shoot over smaller PG and her ball-handling makes her even more difficult to guard off the bounce. She is going to continue to improve as she has a super work ethic and will be very successful at her next designation Limestone College.

[player_tooltip player_id="116867" first="Kennedi" last="Simmons"], Southeast Guilford High School, Greensboro, NC
When she arrived at Southeast Kennedi was already known as a shooter but in her years there she has become so much more. With her relentless hard work ethic and maturity Kennedi has transformed into one of the best shooters in NC. Her form is as close to perfect as a shooter could match that with her technique developed by hundreds of hours and shots and you can see why she is on this list. It is her ability to shoot the ball from outside and her 3pt stroke that opens up her other offensive skills which makes her a tough guard. She has tremendous confidence in her shooting and offensive skills which means she believes she can score on anyone this has been on display many times in her career never more evident than the state championship game last year where her fourth-quarter offensive output propelled her team to the state championship. And now in her senior year, her shooting has continued to improve and this year she has led her team again to the state championship game. Her shooting has her on many honors list including 3rd team All-State and all-district and conference teams. There is no doubt with her work ethic and silky shooting skills she will be a great asset at Winston Salem State University and a force to deal with for years to come. Look for her to continue to fill the hoop up from all over the court for years to come.
[player_tooltip player_id="116881" first="Diamond" last="Thomas"], Knightdale High School, Raleigh, NC
With a name like Diamond you would expect special things and boy does she live up to her name. Even on this list Diamond is special, an elite shooter that has cemented herself as one of the best shooters on the NC high school scene. Her form and technique are the impeccable one that shooters could study and learn from and one that produces great results. It’s her results that have led to her tremendous confidence in her shooting abilities and you can’t argue with her results 71 3pointers made, 231 FGM and her shooting touch extends to the FT line where she shot 81% this season. When you are as pure a shooter as her it will make the rest of the game easier for you and this is definitely the case with her as she has scored over 1000 points in her career a huge feat for any basketball player male or female. All of this and she is only a junior with another year to continue to develop her skills which I am sure she will because of her work ethic. Her honors this year include 1st team All-District and All-Conference teams so the sky is the limit for this shooter and everyone should be excited about watching her play next season.
Ashleigh Williams, RJ Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem, NC
Ashleigh is on this list not only because of what she already possesses but her unlimited potential. She already exhibits one of the smoothest butter shots I have seen and she is only a junior. Her form has improved so much and along with that comes her confidence level and this is the area I feel that she will grow in heading into her senior year next year that will make her one of the best shooters in NC. She is already one of the best knockdown shooters around and her work ethic ensures that she will be even better next season. Each year her shooting numbers have improved as well as her shooting percentages including her 3 pointers made where she made over 50% more 3 pointers this year than in her sophomore year so it again shows her strong work ethic. When you have a shot as pure as Ashleigh the sky is the limit and she is definitely high on the list of shooters to watch next season and I am excited to see her in action.
