Glue players are those that sacrifice individual statistics for the better of the team or they may even accumulate numbers through their versatile play. There is Payton Shelstad Payton Shelstad 5'7" | SG West Linn | 2021 State OR of West Linn, who helps run the show in a team full of talent by being aware and conscious throughout the entirety of the game. Then there are players like McNary’s Leah Doutt Leah Doutt 5'8" | PG McNary | 2021 State OR who is the quintessential point guard who plays at an excellent pace to get her team going. Alexa Borter played on a very perfected scheme in that of Beaverton and it was her job to make sure everything was going according to plan. Players like these found that their role was to keep the team going through difficult times through their consistent and ability to get it done over an array of ways. Here are some of the best glue players of the 2021 class.
Payton Shelstad Payton Shelstad 5'7" | SG West Linn | 2021 State OR 2021 5’7″ SG West Linn HS – The point guard for the West Linn Lions was a key cog in their offense this season, as it was her job to initiate things for the offense. Payton has great court vision as she makes sure to make the best decisions as the primary ball handler. She surveys the top of the key and initiates things by key reads and passes. Her job is to survey the floor and get things running for the West Linn Lions, who have an array of options on offense. A great all-around player that contributed 5.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.2 steals for the Lions.
Bella Stone Bella Stone 5'5" | PG South Medford | 2021 State OR 2021 5’5″ SG South Medford HS – Programs like South Medford, who have incredible talent, can often be dictated by their players off the bench. Bella Stone Bella Stone 5'5" | PG South Medford | 2021 State OR is the epitome of Panthers basketball, as she can truly do it all when her number is called. Bella can score on her own through a solid mid-range game, but can also finish it when the ball is given to her inside. She is a part of the South Medford defense that focuses on pressuring the ball, and utilizes their discipline and skill to get the ball back the other end.
Leah Doutt Leah Doutt 5'8" | PG McNary | 2021 State OR 2021 5’6″ PG McNary HS – Point guard for McNary that battled injuries last night, but was still depended upon as a leader. Leah displays a lot of initiative as a point guard that plays with tremendous pace and truly controls the structure of the game. She plays with a calm demeanor, but pushes the offense, keeping the defense on their toes. Great court awareness with sensational passing instincts. Above average defender with her speed and grit.
Carmen Fiarito 2021 5’7″ SG Franklin HS – Carmen does whatever is needed from her team and in the process collects a lot of statistics across the board. A pivotal part of the Franklin defense, she has a great hand in pick-pocketing passes and rebounds well for a guard. She also displays a lot of ability and willingness to find her teammates inside for easy baskets. She is also a good shooter from deep and can make a basket inside if her team needs her to. Great fundamentals sound play that can do a lot of things out on the floor as she is a team oriented player for the Quakers.
Bridget Winthrop 2021 6’0″ SG Lincoln HS – Bridget is a do-it all guard guard for Lincoln, as she uses her tall and athleticness all across the floor. Defensively she is versatile as she makes great rotations, reacting to the offense, as she gets her stake in steals and blocked shots. Makes a significant contribution on the offensive end by simply making the right play, whether that is taking the right shot or giving it off to her teammate. Good inside touch and can knock down the open jumper.
Hope Neibauer 2021 5’5″ PG Summit HS – Hope is a scrappy play for the Storm who works tirelessly on the defensive side of the floor by pestering her opposition, resulting in a lot of loose balls and steals for her team. She is also a good rebounder for her height based on her tenacity. Her greatest asset on offense is perhaps her three-ball, she is a great on the catch shooter who sets her feet in position before she lets it loose. She is also an excellent outlet passer who likes to push to ball in transition by shooting it out to her teammates.
Alexa Borter 2021 6’0″ SF Beaverton HS – Playing on the State’s best team this past season gave Borter the assignment of making significant plays and being efficient on the floor, as her team depended on all the small things for the greater good this season. She did this in a big fashion and often times the box score did not show this. Borter is a tall forward that utilizes her size on defense by sliding her feet and making the adjustments, resulting in blocks and steals for the versatile forward. She can also drain the three ball in rotation and can make the right passes and score inside as well.
