What would we see this spring if these young women were hitting the hardwood? Every spring we see some breakout players, and without doubt, we would see that again this year.
We will take a look at 4 sophomores that I feel would have been likely candidates to have breakout seasons this spring. These could be players raising their rank as prospects, jumping a level in the minds of scouts and coaches, or even seemingly coming out from nowhere.
Mya Hicks (CG, Ann Arbor Pioneer)
Hicks has a diverse and well rounded game. She’s a hustle and energy player that college coaches need to see. The more exposure she would have got this spring, the more everyone would appreciate the way Hicks’ game starts on the defensive end.
Taylor Thompson Taylor Thompson SF Grand Blanc | 2022 State MI (SF, Grand Blanc)
Thompson was quietly working on her game last summer. It showed in her impressive sophomore season. I think this spring was when she would start to leave her mark on the grassroots season. She’s a gritty wing that affects the game on both ends.
Lauren Sollom Lauren Sollom PF Hartland | 2022 State MI (PF, Hartland)
Sollom is just so naturally gifted to go along with a great work ethic. She has great footwork in the paint and can bring a post defender up high and stretch the floor. I just don’t see any way that Sollom wouldn’t have made huge strides in the spring grassroots season.
Allie Walther Allie Walther SG Schoolcraft | 2022 State MI (SG, Schoolcraft)
I’m just predicting a repeating pattern here. Every spring and summer, Walther goes out and gets a lot better. Last summer in grassroots ball, she was matching up 1-on-1 with D1 prospects and more than holding her own. She’s a crafty shooter and scorer with a huge upside.
