Rankings Update: 2022 Point Guards After finding a post player the next most sought after position is the point guard. The assist givers, that hidden stat in the score sheet are some of the unsung hero’s. We are talking about the true point that runs the show and makes her teammates and team better. Sure we have the combo’s that can run the point but are more adept at putting up the points, and then there’s the hybrid wing that can bring the ball up to start the offense or even start the break of the rebound, this is about the point guard, the player that, no matter how talented your team is, without her you cannot win championships. Point Guards: [player_tooltip player_id="25571" first="Yonta" last="Vaughn"] - 5’8" - Bishop McNamara #2 [caption id="attachment_30217" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="25571" first="Yonta" last="Vaughn"][/caption]Yonta has been the starting point guard for the Mustangs since starting high school. She had been playing up in the spring/summer on the EYBL level and is now a WCAC champion. She has been the lead guard under two McDonald’s All Americans and has played against pretty much every top player in the country. She has great vision and sees plays well before they develop. [player_tooltip player_id="137209" first="Ny’Ceara" last="Pryor"] - 5’2" - Western #6 [caption id="attachment_76449" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="137209" first="Ny’Ceara" last="Pryor"][/caption]Ny’Ceara has been one of the areas top point guards since elementary school. Her handle and control of the ball in traffic is superior. She passes well on the move and has a quick release to get her shot off against taller defenders. [player_tooltip player_id="88777" first="Jenesis" last="Massenburg"] - 5’6" - Capital Christian #10 [caption id="attachment_100150" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="88777" first="Jenesis" last="Massenburg"][/caption]Jenesis is one of the fastest players in the region with the ball in her hand. She can get end to end before defenses have time to set up. She is really good at attacking the basket and dishing off the ball or finishing. She plays the game at a fast pace and is the perfect fit for teams that like to play uptempo basketball. [player_tooltip player_id="88782" first="Gabrielle" last="Johnson"] - 5’7" - Western #22 [caption id="attachment_62699" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="88782" first="Gabrielle" last="Johnson"][/caption]Gabby has an infectious attitude that makes the game fun. Her teammates enjoy playing with her and they respond with their effort. She has a great feel for the game and is a terror on defense. [player_tooltip player_id="137217" first="Myah" last="Simmons"] - 5’5" - Roland Park #26 [caption id="attachment_37288" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="137217" first="Myah" last="Simmons"][/caption]Myah has basketball in her DNA, her father is a coach and her sister is a division one baller. She has a high IQ and repeatedly makes the right play. She is an excellent three point shooter that can open the floor with her range, [player_tooltip player_id="137239" first="Regina" last="Walton"] - 5’2" - Elizabeth Seton #27 [caption id="attachment_61461" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="137239" first="Regina" last="Walton"][/caption]Regina is a quick point guard and her passes are on time and on the money giving teammate the perfect opportunity to score. She was locked in for a great spring that would have seen her stock rise considerably. She may be one of the player most affected by the shut down, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see her ignite the scene once play resumes. [player_tooltip player_id="137220" first="Sammera" last="Smith"] - 5’6" - Eleanor Roosevelt #28 Sammy has a full arsenal of tricks in her bag as she can drive, pass and shoot. She pushes the ball well in transition keeping her head up for teammates running the floor. [player_tooltip player_id="137219" first="Isabella" last="Tanedo"] - 5’4" - St. John’s #30 Bella is one of the best shooters in the class and has played at the top level in the WCAC for the past couple of seasons with a championship under her belt. Her sister is headed to college to play and this is her year to run the show for the Cadets. She is able to find ways to score while being unselfish. [player_tooltip player_id="137223" first="Naila" last="Newman"] - 5’1" - Rockville #40 [caption id="attachment_85124" align="alignnone" width="300"] [player_tooltip player_id="137223" first="Naila" last="Newman"][/caption]Naila is deceptively quick. She can change speeds and stop and go on a dime making her difficult to defend. She has a good mid range shot and can pull up on the drive.
