<span style="font-size: 8pt;"><em>In selecting the five regional areas for my regional articles, I used the Indiana Coaches of Girls’ Sports Association’s (ICGSA) five districts. Schools are evenly distributed by county and somewhat geographical, though not exact. Counties included in the "Central & West Central" articles include: Boone, Clay, Clinton, Fountain, Hamilton, Hendricks, Marion, Montgomery, Morgan, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Tipton, Vermillion, Vigo, and Warren.</em></span>
Across the entire Prep Hoops Network, we are exploring ways to bring you different types of content in each of the states we cover. One idea we’ve come up with is "city rankings", where we highlight some of the better players in each metropolitan area. I felt like in Indiana, however, there are talented kids spread all over the state, so it wouldn’t be fair to solely focus on Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Evansville, for example. Instead, I have divided the state into five regions based on a fairly even distribution of the 400+ high schools available to choose from. It isn’t exact, but it seemed like the best way to make sure all prospects from the Hoosier state were considered. (<em>Please see the italicized fine print above for a more specific breakdown of the counties used in this article.</em>) Without further ado, below is a look at some of the top returning point guards in "Central & West Central" Indiana, arranged alphabetically within their graduating classes.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="10665" first="Ally" last="Becki"], 2021, 5-8 PG, Brownsburg H.S.</strong></span>
I remember first watching Ally when she was between her 8th Grade and Freshman years, and she had this combination of savvy and feistiness to where you just knew you would hear her name throughout high school. She is quick/fast, athletic, long, and she’ll run through walls for her team. She has done a nice job of transitioning from more of a scorer to a distributor who can score throughout her high school career. She has great instincts and feel for the game, she can handle, pass, and shoot/score, plus she’ll get after it defensively. Ally has already verbally committed to play at Ball State University.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="62546" first="Audra" last="Emmerson"], 2021, 5-6 PG, Fishers H.S.</strong></span>
I really enjoy watching Audra play, and I think she is one of the most under-recruited prospects in Indiana’s 2021 class. I have seen some similarities between her and 2019 Center Grove grad <strong>Ella Thompson</strong>. Audra still needs strength, but she’s extremely long, quick/fast, and very feisty at both ends of the floor. She has a natural feel for the point guard position, she’s almost too unselfish at times, but she is a very good perimeter shooter who can burn defenders who lose track of her. Audra has put together a nice high school career, but I think she’ll be even better in college.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="99364" first="Courtney" last="Fields"], 2021, 5-7 CG, Cathedral H.S.</strong></span>
After averaging 8.1 points as a Freshman, then not playing as a Sophomore, Courtney responded in a nice way this season, averaging 12.5 points and 2.8 assists per game. She is a long, wiry strong, and athletic combo guard. She can glide to the rim and finish around the basket, she is a good mid-range shooter, and she can make an open rhythm 3-pointer, though her perimeter shot could be more consistent. I also think she can become a versatile, high-level defender. I just really like her combination of athleticism, skill, and playmaking ability.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="62552" first="Jillian" last="Osswald"], 2021, 5-7 PG, Hamilton Heights H.S.</strong></span>
Jillian has done a nice job of transforming her game over the years. Don’t get me wrong, she’s always been a nice athlete with good speed and quickness, but she has really worked on her handle, her perimeter shooting, and understanding how to sense tone and change speeds. She has really good length, wiry strength, and she has always been an active and aggressive defender. This past season she nearly doubled her scoring and assists, averaging 13.4 points and 4.0 assists for the Huskies. I think she’ll be a tremendous small college guard.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="10660" first="Ariana" last="Wiggins"], 2021, 5-8 PG, Heritage Christian School</strong></span>
Since Ariana has entered high school, she has done nothing but perfect her craft, work on her strength, and improved her understanding of the game. I think what most impresses me about her, is that while she’s a really nice athlete in all directions, she plays at a pretty even pace, lets the game come to her, and picks her spots to explode and make highlight plays. She can be an elite defender, plus it’s difficult to turn her over. She is #28 on our recently released PGH National Rankings, she has committed to the University of Michigan, and she’ll certainly be a Miss Basketball candidate.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128154" first="Zoe" last="Stewart"], 2022, 5-7 CG, Terre Haute North Vigo H.S.</strong></span>
Zoe is a really nice talent over in Terre Haute who many people don’t know about statewide, and I think as she starts to play in front of college coaches more, she’ll really see her recruiting start to take off. She has some length, she’s a wiry strong athlete, and she moves well in most directions. She can handle the ball, make plays, and create offense for herself or others, but she could be just a little more efficient with it. She’s also a good all-around scorer and a solid shooter. Zoe is certainly athletic enough to become a high-level defender as well. I really like her potential to develop into a nice college prospect.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128177" first="Macy" last="Timberman"], 2022, 5-5 CG, Northview H.S.</strong></span>
Macy is another really nice prospect in West Central Indiana. She is a quick/fast, feisty, water-bug type of combo guard. She can get by defenders, get into the lane, and collapse defenses, she can make shots at all three levels, and she’s a willing passer who can find open teammates. Her energy is contagious, as she just flies around the floor, making plays at both ends. If anything, I would like to see her tighten her handle just a little and work on understanding situations, changing speeds, and settling for the efficient play instead of forcing the highlight play.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128118" first="Tanyuel" last="Welch"], 2022, 5-7 PG, North Central H.S. (Indianapolis)</strong></span>
Tanyuel started at times as a Freshman, but she really improved from year-1 to year-2. A lot of that can be attributed to strength and growth. She is absorbing contact much better, she is shooting it more consistently from the perimeter, and she’s taking care of the ball better. She’s still a little on the thin side and needs strength, but she is very fast, quick, and moves effortlessly around the floor. She also plays with a quiet toughness and doesn’t shy away from contact at her size. Tanyuel can also be an elite level defender with her length and athleticism.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="2402" first="Olivia" last="Brown"], 2023, 5-7 PG, Hamilton Southeastern H.S.</strong></span>
Olivia played some Varsity minutes for a talented and Senior-laden Hamilton Southeastern team, but she’ll likely be much more involved for the Royals as a Sophomore. She is a really nice, traditional point guard prospect. She can handle it, run offense, create opportunities for her teammates, and she’s a really nice passer with good court vision. She can get to the rim and score, but as she makes her perimeter shot more consistent, look for her to be a real threat as a scorer. I also have been impressed with Olivia’s motor, ability, and attention at the defensive end of the floor.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="59773" first="Ashlynn" last="Shade"], 2023, 5-9 CG, Noblesville H.S.</strong></span>
Ashlynn is a tremendous basketball player who is way ahead of most of her peers right now because she’s incredibly skilled, physically strong, athletic in most directions, and she plays with a tremendous motor. She has drawn comparisons to 2015 Columbus North grad <strong>Ali Patberg</strong>, and there are definitely a lot of similarities. But Ali’s intensity and emotion are always visible, and she thrives off of that. I think Ashlynn is still trying to find that comfort zone as a younger player...she is just so even-keeled right now. But Ashlynn can handle, pass, shoot/score, rebound, and defend as well as anyone, and that’s why she’s our #1 prospect in 2023.
