Class 2A – Region 8: 2023’s to Watch

As we look for other ways to cover prospects we thought it would be beneficial to cover players in a way that allows us to cover those we don’t write much about. We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed. Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible. We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges. We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="160575" first="Aliyah" last="Humphrey"] - Underwood</strong> Underwood found its stride late in the season, winning five in a row and reaching the regional quarterfinals before a tough two-point setback to AHSTW. The Eagles return the majority of the roster including freshman [player_tooltip player_id="160575" first="Aliyah" last="Humphrey"]. Last year, Humphrey scored 190 points with 77 rebounds, 41 steals and 16 assists. She started 14 of 22 games, shooting 36 percent from the field, 37 percent from deep and 56 percent at the free throw line. <strong>Clara Teigland - Treynor</strong> It was a bit of a down season for Treynor, as the Cardinals finished with eight wins after reaching the regional quarterfinals. Newcomer Clara Teigland led the team in assists with 59 while adding 161 points, 89 rebounds and 49 steals. Teigland also made 20 three-pointers, one of four players to surpass that mark for Treynor. <strong>Kara Hohertz - Earlham</strong> Newcomer Kara Hohertz had a nice debut on the varsity scene for Earlham, scoring 145 points with 129 rebounds as she started all 21 games. Hohertz shot 37 percent from the field and made eight 3-pointers, adding 37 blocks and 21 steals to her season. <strong>Leah Hall - Underwood</strong> Another freshman who surpassed the 100-point mark for Underwood was Leah Hall. Hall finished with 133 points in 21 games, shooting almost 33 percent from the floor and 35 percent from deep with a team-leading 23 made 3-pointers. She also had 32 rebounds and 12 steals, along with making 60 percent of her free throw attempts. <strong>Macanna Guritz - Logan-Magnolia</strong> There is nothing quite like experiencing the state tournament, and that is exactly how freshman Macanna Guritz ended her first year with Logan-Magnolia. Guritz recorded 97 points, 101 rebounds and 17 assists to help the Panthers earn a regional championship and 21 wins on the season.
