Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Jordyn Stokes Jordyn Stokes 5'5" | PG Estherville Lincoln Central | 2023 State IA – Estherville-Lincoln Central
Several underclassmen helped Estherville-Lincoln Central win 15 games and reach the regional quarterfinals last year before coming up short vs. Algona.
Now, that returning group will look for even more success in 2020-21.
Freshman Jordyn Stokes Jordyn Stokes 5'5" | PG Estherville Lincoln Central | 2023 State IA is part of that collection of talent. She finished her first season with 215 points on 43 percent shooting, adding 56 rebounds, 47 assists and 40 steals.
Stokes also knocked down 17 three-pointers and made 52 of 68 free throws.
Lillian Etherington Lillian Etherington 5'7" | PG Algona | 2023 State IA – Algona
Plenty of new faces will be needed for Algona this coming winter after graduation took much of the team production.
Sophomore-to-be Lillian Etherington Lillian Etherington 5'7" | PG Algona | 2023 State IA is among those returning with varsity experience after posting 109 points in 23 games. She also had 52 rebounds, 19 steals and 18 assists, sinking 21 three-pointers.
A’Lailiah Perry – Algona
Another member of the Class of 2023 that helped Algona reach the regional semifinal was A’Lailiah Perry, who recorded 46 points, 34 rebounds and eight blocks in 19 games.
Perry has nice size to control the paint and should be a vital cog for the Bulldogs this coming year.
Rebecca Hejlik – Garner-Hayfield/Ventura
Not many freshman saw the court last year in the region, but Garner-Hayfield/Ventura’s Rebecca Hejlik did, even starting a pair of games for the Cardinals.
Hejlik ended up playing in 20 games total, scoring 24 points with 23 rebounds and 12 steals. She buried seven three-pointers on the year.
Tora Solbach – Algona
Algona needs to replace the likes of Abbey Holmes Abbey Holmes 5'8" | SG Algona | 2020 State IA and Ashlin Young in the backcourt, and Tora Solbach saw action in a handful of games last year to give her some on-the-court experience.
Solbach scored 23 points with 12 rebounds, six steals and three made triples last year in eight games. She will need to be a producer for the new-look Bulldogs in 2020-21.
