In this last article for Small School Standouts, we take a look at the freshman class – a group who paved their way through their various skills sets and made the most out of their opportunities. Amy Dickover Amy Dickover 6'1" | C Sutherlin | 2023 OR and Micah Wicks Micah Wicks 5'5" | PG Sutherlin | 2023 State OR started on a very good Sutherlin team who duked it out twice with Clatskanie, the second contest being the 3A Final at Coos Bay. Maya Helmen was a contributor on that Clatskanie team as a do-it all scrappy guard that makes an instant impact once she hits the floor. Central Linn’s Maya Rowland is another name to watch, a dynamic guard who makes her presence felt on both ends of the floor.
Amy Dickover Amy Dickover 6'1" | C Sutherlin | 2023 OR 2023 6’1” C Sutherlin HS (Pictured in black) – Amy is a big, tall, post who is a force to be reckoned with down low defensively, as it is second nature for her to be physical and battle on the boards. She snags them at an excellent pace and challenges shots at the rim regularly. In the highly contested 3A OSAA State Final between Sutherlin and Clatskanie, Amy showcased all of these skills with an impressive 6 point, 14 rebound, 6 block performance as she had a hand in everything that day. She is raw offensively and still developing on that end of the floor, but she made strides as a fearless post who can score off second chance opportunities.
Micah Wicks Micah Wicks 5'5" | PG Sutherlin | 2023 State OR 2023 5’5” PG Suthlerlin HS – Micah was given the keys to the Sutherlin offense as a freshman and did a tremendous job during her freshman campaign. She is a confident guard whose job is to survey the field and get the offense going, but once she gets loose she is difficult to keep up with. She slashes at the rim but is also capable of knocking down the open jump shot. Defensively, her quick foot speed and excellent lateral movement ability allows her to keep up with her opposition, as she helps keep a lid on them. Looking for a big jump next season.
Maya Rowland 2023 5’3” PG Central Linn HS – Maya filled out a utility role for Central Linn last season as a gritty, quick defender constantly hovering around the ball and prying for the steal. She is constantly eyeing the right opportunity to hone it and get the loose ball and start the transition, where she is capable of finishing or will pass it off to a teammate. But her biggest weapon on offense perhaps is her shot, which she can hit the three-pointer with great consistency and can get hot in an instant. In a contest against Oakland she had an astounding 7 steals and versus Coquille she made 6 three-pointers.
Maya Helmen 2023 5’4” SG Clatskanie HS – Helmen is capable of a little bit of everything, dictated by the fact she competed in the 100 meter, shot put, and discus in middle school – an interesting combination of events. For Clatskanie, she contributed every way possible as an ignited defender who could take it to the rim herself after a big steal or as a perimeter shot maker who waits patiently along the arc. Truly a team player who makes the right play at the right time for her team and isn’t any of the bit selfish.
