This time it was the Hoosier Summer Invitational at Warsaw High School’s campus, including using their beautiful new 4-court fieldhouse. The event was loaded with most of the best teams/programs from the state of Michigan, as well as a handful of teams from Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Below is a look at 11 Michigan prospects from the Class of 2022 who I thought stood out in last Saturday’s action when I was able to see them.

I have already written about Lexus here in the past, but I continue to be impressed by her play each time out. She is so consistent and skillful, plus she has such a tremendous feel for the game that she is just enjoyable to watch. She has great length, fluid athleticism, and a nice burst to get by defenders. She is much tougher and more physical than you might think at first glance, so she is effective attacking the basket and scoring through contact. She can knock down an outside shot, and she always seems to make the right play to fit each situation. I also really like her tenacity at the defensive end of the floor.
Ashley Bower, 2022, 5-9 W, Portland H.S.
When I saw Ashley’s team play from an adjacent court, she really stood out to me. She is long, wiry strong, and she’s a really nice North/South athlete with good bounce to her. She is a primary ball-handler and creator for her CCE team, and I’d consider her somewhere between a point forward and a combo guard for the next level. She could stand to gain some strength and learn to play a bit lower to the ground, especially when handling the ball, but I was very intrigued by her ability to get by defenders and collapse the defense. She also did some nice things using her length at the defensive end of the floor.

Olivia is another one of those long, wiry strong, fluidly athletic playmakers who can play a variety of positions. She is a primary ball-handler for her travel team, she is always on attack, and she plays with a great motor. She has solid ball skill, but she could be a little tighter with her handle in small spaces. I do like her toughness and willingness to play somewhat physical, despite her thinner frame. She can knock down an open rhythm jumper, she plays with energy at the defensive end of the floor, and she can defend multiple types of guards/wings.

It was tough to get a full read on Adelaide and her entire skillset, as her team was often trying to break pressure in the game I saw, so what touches she had were mostly open layups at the rim. At the same time, she has a great frame, solid strength, but she also has a long wingspan/reach as well. She played with a great motor, didn’t mind physicality one bit, and struck me as a more traditional post who liked to play around the block, both offensively and defensively. She runs the floor hard, rebounds by boxing out or pursuing, and I think she has a lot of potential to work with.

There is something to be said about length and fluidity, and Kate has a bit of both. She is extremely long, she runs the floor very well North/South, and she tends to glide from one spot to the next. She looks to play inside quite a bit, and while she isn’t overly physical, she doesn’t shy away from contact. She does try to keep the ball high, and she has some natural instincts around the basket. At the same time, Kate also looked very comfortable facing the rim, and she even took a couple of rhythm 3-pointers that looked pure. She has a great deal of upside and just needs a little skill work/strength.
Molly Libby, 2022, 5-8 SG, Lakeland H.S.
Molly is kind of an unassuming kid when you first look at her, but she plays much stronger than she looks, she’s quietly a tough-nosed ballplayer, and she plays with a great motor. She is a nice all-around athlete, she finished well around the basket when I saw her, and she struck me as an “intangibles” type of kid…one of those kids who may never lead you statistically in one category, but who contributes in many different ways and helps you win ballgames. If she can make her handle and shot just a bit more dynamic, I think she could take her game to another level offensively.

Lina is a very long, wiry guard who is a really nice, fluid athlete in all directions. She has solid ball skill and really good instincts for the point guard position, and I really like her savvy and the calming pace that she plays with. She always looks in control, and very little seemed to rattle her last Saturday. She is more of a traditional point guard, and she looked to create and distribute more than shoot/score. I would like to see her again to know how well she does shoot/score the ball, but I think as a true floor general, she does a really nice job of leading her team and helping them get into their offense.

The more I watch Madison play, the more I really enjoy and appreciate what she brings to the table as a ballplayer. She plays with great pace and calm, she has natural instincts and a great feel for the game, and she always plays with a good motor and hustles at both ends of the floor. She has a wiry strong frame, good all-around athleticism, but she can also knock down an open rhythm jumper if you help off of her. I think she’s a very instinctive traditional point guard offensively, but I would like to see her maybe get just a bit quicker and defend water-bug type point guards a little better in the future.

I have been really impressed with Lauren’s play all Summer long, but it has been the bigger games they’ve played where she has stepped up the most. Last Saturday they had a tough matchup/outcome against Sports City U out of Ohio, but Lauren played very well and looked like she belonged on that floor. She has tremendous length, wiry strength, and really nice athleticism and fluidity. Her ability to glide by defenders and finish in full-extension at the basket with either hand is impressive. She has shot and handled the ball better all Summer, and she can become a high-level defender with her talent.

I saw Ruby several times last Summer, but this was my first time seeing her this year. She is still that extremely long, slender, but very fluid and athletic playmaker. She is a natural point guard with great instincts off the bounce. I think at times she is playing almost too fast and needs to learn how to slow down and let the game come to her, but she is on a different level than some of her teammates as well. I didn’t really see her shoot it outside, so I’d be curious to see how that part of her game has come along. But I think she can become an elite defender with her length, speed, and quick feet.

Kendal really stood out to me because of her tremendous motor and her willingness to run hard when changing ends of the floor (both directions). She has a strong base to her frame, a long, wiry strong upper body, and she is a solid athlete who moves fairly well in most directions. She is absolutely willing to be physical and make first contact, but she also has the skill to face the basket and play in the mid-post effectively. She does a lot off the bounce as well, probably a little too much at times, but she does have the ability to put it on the floor and get somewhere. She is very intriguing.
