It’s never too early for too-early-season. With fall sports and school underway, it’s only a matter of time before the winter sports season is upon us.
With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top guards in Region 3
[player_tooltip player_id="98728" first="Madelyn" last="Schmidt"], Kidder County
Schmidt was an all-state selection as a sophomore for the Wolves and helped lead Kidder County to the region championship game last winter, averaging 17 points, five rebounds and six assists. She’s elite on the defensive end of the floor and sets the tone with her ability to put pressure on the ball. And her command of the offense is as good as any individual player in the region, as she’s a strong perimeter shooter and a fearless slasher.
[player_tooltip player_id="14186" first="Molly" last="Musland"], LaMoure/Litchville-Marion
Musland led LLM in scoring last year, averaging better than 14 points per game while helping the Loboes reach the state tournament. She’s a solid defender and rebounds it well from the wing, and her ability to make plays in complementary fashion makes her tough to guard. She’ll have the ball in his hands a lot more as an upperclassman - don’t be surprised if she puts up huge numbers for an LLM team that expects to contend.
Teegan Scheer, Linton/HMB
Scheer’s been an all-region player and double-figure scorer each of the last two years. The Lions should be one of the favorites in Region 3 this winter in large part because she’s one of the best guards in the area. Her ability to create offense for herself is a huge plus and she’s an athletic, aggressive defensive player at the point of attack.
[player_tooltip player_id="99825" first="Jaycee" last="Richter"], Linton/HMB
Richter took her game to another level as a sophomore and emerged as an all-region caliber player after the Lions lost Erica Umber to injury about midway through the year. Her ability to score from all over the floor and facilitate makes her one of the most valuable guards in the region.
Allison Thomas, Medina/Pingree/Buchanan
Thomas has been a key rotation player for MPB each of the last two years and is one of the best sophomores in the region after taking her game to an all-region level as a freshman. She’s a quality multi-level scorer and one of the better shooters in the region. The Thunder won 16 games last season and advanced to the Region 3 semifinals; if it is going to contend this winter, Thomas will have to take her game to an even higher level.
