We have pretty much arrived to girls basketball practice kicking off here in South Florida. My plan is to attend practices of certain programs over the coming weeks. Keep posted on our main page for those evaluations.
For now, I would like to highlight my preseason selections for Palm Beach County. As I have said on the boys side, PBC has an underrated layer of basketball talent here in the region. For example, a bunch of prospects from the 2023 class were highly considered on this list (Bouie,Ramsey, Romano,Bentley).
Let’s jump into it...
[player_tooltip player_id="91559" first="Jordana" last="Codio"] - American Heritage (Delray)
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91559" first="Jordana" last="Codio"] would be a unanimous selection on any basketball publication in the state. Moreover, Codio can make an argument as one of the best players in the state of Florida. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 23 points, seven rebounds, 2.5 steals and two assists per game last season for the Stallions. Codio is a three-dimensional scorer with superior size that few in Florida can defend. A prospect that still has her best basketball ahead of her. Codio is currently committed to play at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Badgers got a tremendous player out of the Sunshine State.
[player_tooltip player_id="91535" first="Kayla" last="DeHerrera"] - St. Andrew’s (Boca Raton)
2021 [player_tooltip player_id="91535" first="Kayla" last="DeHerrera"] will be one of the top seniors in the county this season. The 5-foot-5 point guard averaged 17.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game as a junior for the Scots. DeHerrera eclipsed double-figures in 20 games last season and is an excellent free-throw shooter. Against St. John Paul II Academy, DeHerrera scored 74 points across three match-ups on 28-of-60 from the field. In the first contest, DeHerrera posted a season-high eleven made free-throws on twelve attempts. The 2X All-County selection puts in equal work on defense as she tallied over 60 steals. Berry and Oglethorpe have offered her. The Scots have a clear leader with her on the floor.
[player_tooltip player_id="91492" first="Jahnae" last="Midget"] - Seminole Ridge (Loxahatchee)
2021 Jahnea Midget was iron tough on a Seminole Ridge squad that dressed six varsity players. The 5-foot-11 guard/forward averaged 23.5 points and eight rebounds per game for the Hawks last season. Those stats are amazing when you consider the amount of minutes Midget put in as a junior. Out of 25 games, Midget scored 20 or or more points in 17 contests. Her worth ethic extended on the glass with 11 games of ten or more boards. Against Leonard, Midget scored a season-high 37 points and buried six 3-pointers. Midget has committed to Palm Beach Atlantic University. Check her out if you get a chance in Loxahatchee.
[player_tooltip player_id="91498" first="Zaida" last="Gonzalez"] - Palm Beach Lakes
2021 [player_tooltip player_id="91498" first="Zaida" last="Gonzalez"] is another three-dimensional scorer with a keen desire at attacking the basket. Gonzalez was part of a Rams squad that went 21-10 and reached the Class 7A final four. The 5-foot-8 guard averaged 14.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game for Palm Beach Lakes last season. Gonzalez will be the clear leader for the Rams as they replace three key seniors that combined to average 43 points per game. Considering Gonzalez committed to Florida International University, I have a feeling the Rams will be okay with her at the helm.
Mel Garbarsky -Trinity Christian Academy (Lake Worth)
2021 Mel Garbarsky is one of the best pure scorers in the region. It comes as no surprise that her 28.2 points per game led Class 2A. In fact, those numbers placed her 23rd nationally in scoring according to MaxPreps. It says something about a player when an opponent knows you are going to score, and you still drop massive numbers. Overall, Garbarsky scored 20 or more points in 15 of 17 contests. Against Jupiter Christian, Garbarsky posted a season-high 42 points. All of these numbers are amazing when you consider Trinity Christian Academy averaged just under 42 points per game. If you are out in Lake Worth, Garbarsky is a box office watch.
