The 2 day event featured 16 teams from around the Palmetto State playing 2 games a piece. Lets take a look at some of the UNDERCLASSMEN that stood out on Day 1 from the event.
Alexis Sexton Alexis Sexton 5'9" | CG Lexington | 2022 State SC (2022) – Lexington HS
Sexton a left-handed guard was sensational on Day 1 with 32 points for the Wildcats. Sexton was able to slash to the cup or knockdown the jumper. Sexton at times plays the game well beyond her years with her maturity on the floor. Sexton shares the ball and plays the game with a good basketball understanding.
Lauren Wearbon Lauren Wearbon 5'6" | CG Southside | 2023 State SC (2023) – Mauldin HS
Wearbon is quite shifty with the ball and getting it into the gaps on the floor. Wearbon was able to connect on some floaters around the cup along with taking some tough shots at times. Wearbon plays the game with a good bit of confidence for Head Coach Nena Stone.
Peris Smith Peris Smith 6'2" | PF North Augusta | 2023 State SC (2023) – North Augusta HS
Smith never seems to let us down with her steady play game after game. Smith brings good intensity and effort every time she touches the floor. Smith will really look to be more of focal point this season the Yellow Jackets roster with the graduation of several seniors. Can the Yellow Jackets win a 5th straight state championship ?
Tysonia Lowe Tysonia Lowe 5'5" | CG Marlboro County | 2023 State SC (2023) – Marlboro County HS (Bennettsville)
Lowe didn’t pile up the stats today but she really does know how to play the game. Lowe can create her own shot on the floor and especially is quite effective with a nice pull-up mid-range jumper to boot. Lowe and her teammate Jasmine Norman Jasmine Norman 5'6" | SG Marlboro County | 2021 State SC will play in the Class 3A ranks this season after moving down from a year ago.
Timya Grice (2024) – Mauldin HS (pictured on the front)
Grice 6’6 that’s correct is the just part of the future for Lady Mavericks basketball. Grice runs the floor very well and keeps the ball up high after rebounding it. Grice plays with her back to the basket and and has a great wingspan already for such a young age. Prep Girls Hoops first saw her this summer on the Grassroots Circuit with Team South Carolina.
Jakiah McDuffie Jakiah McDuffie 5'6" | PG South Aiken | 2024 State SC (2024) – South Aiken HS
This was my first time seeing her play and WOW. McDuffie has a very bright future that’s for sure for the Thoroughbreds. McDuffie a point guard plays the game so poised and mature from out top. McDuffie was able to finish at the cup with her both hands and was effective using ball screens to advance to the cup. McDuffie logged a lot of minutes and really keeps the ball on a string. McDuffie will be a name to watch over the next few years for Head Coach Zackery Green
