Zoe Nelson Zoe Nelson 6'1" | PF Hendrickson | 2021 State TX -6’1 SG/PF (Hendrickson)
Nelson falls into the “what can’t she do” category because that’s easier to come up with and fewer characters to use and to be honest, when she is on, it “ain’t ” much that can be done to stop her and I saw that from the numerous years she played for Austin Elite yet this game right here featured in their local paper actually had me visualizing what I’ve seen over and over from her. To cap the week off, she helped lead her squad to their 6th straight victory against one of the top teams in the state
Blake Matthews–5’5 PG ( Atascocita) junior
Matthews has taken her game up to yet another level and when you have speed and athleticism, can create your shot as well as handle the ball, under pressure, going full speed, size doesn’t matter because her mindset is “you can’t stop me” and her energy level is the same from start to finish yet her “will to win” helped propel a ferocious comeback against a talented Dobie squad. Matthews jumper is just smooth and accurate, her release is quick yet you don’t want to try and guard her tightly because her explosiveness coupled with acrobatic finishes makes her an “and one”waiting to happen
Riley McCloskey Riley McCloskey 5'3" | PG Memorial | 2023 State TX -5’5 PG (Memorial)
McCloskey is on the verge of having “clutch” tagged to her name as she has put on several performances over the season, down the stretch to save, fuel comebacks or buzzer-beaters for the win and her performance against Katy Taylor falls into one of those “down the stretch efforts” as she took over dropping a three and hitting some huge free throws to help seal the victory. Her understanding of how to control the tempo kept her squad in a position to win the game yet when it on the line, she delivered
Gwendlyn McGrew Gwendlyn McGrew 6'0" | CG Pasadena Memorial | 2024 State TX -6’1 SG/PF (Dobie)
McGrew just keeps amazing me with her ability, agility, and desire to be the best that she can be ad watching her explode with the ball after a defensive rebound almost makes me want to stand up because she’s a “nightmare to defend” in the open court. Her size and strength combined with her athleticism and skillset is always on full display, that crossover is college-ready right now but her body control while finishing, her pull-up jumper, that’s been there since I caught her a couple of summers ago yet her seeing the floor just makes her a thrill to watch not to mention her range, she’s a #BCSLock yet her upside is through the roof
Melinda Winston-6’1 PF (Hastings)
Winston has started off the season on a rampage averaging just under a double-double at 19/9 that’s points and rebounds rounded up yet she’s rounding up defenders trying to figure out a way to defend her. She has the size, agility, and power, her finishes with players hanging on her have been caught by me for what seems like a lifetime yet what I really love is how she has kept adding to her game to become more than just a decoy, to a solid finisher, to finishing after contact, to now facing the basket and scoring as well as taking defenders off the dribble
Zachara Perkins-6’1 PG (St Pius)
Perkins went completely off helping lead her team to three victories during the week and her back to back 30 point games, 37 which included 6/8 from BTA and closing the week with 30, 4/4 from BTA as well as 10/15 from the field just should be an eye-opener for many who don’t understand that this game is about PROGRESSION and it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish and if you observe her mannerisms as well as focus on the court, she is nowhere near where she’s going to be, that’s scary, not for me, I can;t hold her
