The Miss Basketball award is probably the most prestigious distinction in Michigan high school basketball. The honor has existed since 1981. It has been won by legends such as Kysre Gondrezick, Tabitha Pool, Jordan Walker, Deanna Nolan, and Liz Shrimek. Last year, Detroit Edison’s [player_tooltip player_id="2478" first="Gabrielle" last="Elliott"] claimed the honor. In a condensed season, the Miss Basketball award may be even tougher than normal to determine. It seems like the right time to introduce some realistic candidates for the award this season.
We’ll start by looking at Detroit Edison’s superstar floor general [player_tooltip player_id="4132" first="Damiya" last="Hagemann"]. Prep Girls Hoops Michigan has her ranked as the number 1 prospect in the state in the class of 2021. Prep Girls Hoops puts her at number 35 nationally. Hagemann is committed to attend and play at Michigan State University following her high school career.
Hagemann has had extremely high expectations since the day she arrived in high school. She has more than delivered. She has managed to stand out, even while being surrounded by big name players like [player_tooltip player_id="2386" first="Rickea" last="Jackson"] and [player_tooltip player_id="2478" first="Gabrielle" last="Elliott"] (the 2019 and 2020 Michigan Miss Basketball players). Hagemann has played for a high profile team and has excelled in the pressure situations that come with it. In fact, she has never experienced a finished season of high school basketball that didn’t end with a state championship.
Hagemann plays the game with a certain flash and flare. She makes the tough pass look easy and makes the impossible pass look routine. Hagemann excels in a fast paced game. Needless to say, she pushes the ball up the floor with the dribble looking to create in the open floor. Hagemann pushes, but definitely doesn’t panic, always staying poised and making the proper decision with the ball.
Hagemann could be helped in the Miss Basketball race by the fact that her team is an odds on favorite to win a 4th consecutive state championship. It would be a miraculous achievement for her and her school to see a DEPSA player win the award for a 3rd consecutive year. [player_tooltip player_id="4132" first="Damiya" last="Hagemann"] would definitely be a worthy winner a good representation of the quality of basketball being played in the state of Michigan.
