The defending 3A state champions looked like defending 3A state champions on Monday night as Keenan opened this year’s 3A state playoffs with a dominant win over its visitors from Wren. The final score was 89-43.
The Raiders set the tone for the contest early as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first minute of play, prompting a Wren timeout. Keenan never looked back.
Keenan will face Blue Ridge in the quarterfinals of the 3A tournament on Thursday.
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand at Keenan to observe what turned out to be a one-sided matchup. Here is a look at who caught our eye.

[player_tooltip player_id="175308" first="Raina" last="McGowens"] – 2024 – Wren High School – While the result was a far distance from what the Hurricanes were hoping for on Monday night, Wren can look ahead with the knowledge that it is only graduating two seniors. McGowens will be returning and the Hurricanes will be pleased to have her in Wren colors for the next three seasons. Before the game got completely out of hand, McGowens kept the Hurricanes in it with timely offense, 3-point shooting and an ability to attract contact to get to the line. She has also shown signs of already assuming a leadership role in her freshman season. McGowens concluded with 15 points.

[player_tooltip player_id="124104" first="Milaysia" last="Fulwiley"] – 2023 – Keenan High School – It is virtually a guarantee at this point that whenever a recap of a Keenan game is written, Fulwiley will be written about. She dropped 32 on the evening and, in vintage Fulwiley fashion, scored in a variety of ways – in transition, behind the arc, or at the free throw line. Whenever the ball left her hands, it was likely to go through the hoop. She also passes to open teammates and is dangerous on defense as well with her ability to steal the ball and go the other way with it. Fulwiley is also creative with her ball handling and dribbling as well.
Milla Lugo – 2023 – Wren High School – Scoringwise, the second quarter was actually the Hurricanes’ most productive of the game when the Raiders only outscored Wren by a margin of 16-13. Lugo recovered after a hard fall in the first quarter which took her out of the game for a bit to be tended to what appeared to be her right eye. Lugo then proceeded to score five of Wren’s 13 points in the second quarter. Lugo also is a ball hawk, shot blocker and can be effective on the glass as well. She also plays for the Wren volleyball team.

[player_tooltip player_id="216961" first="Jailyn" last="Oree"] – 2022 – Keenan High School – Oree is alright with the Raiders. She was another key factor in what made the performance by Reggie McLain’s Raiders so dominant as Oree converted on a number of high-percentage shots near the rim. And on a few of those opportunities, she drew contact and got to the free throw line. Need Oree-bound or two? She is definitely skilled on both the offensive and defensive glass and can be tough to guard. Oree finished the game with 11 points – including six in the first quarter when Keenan finished the stanza with a commanding 29-6 lead.
[player_tooltip player_id="124113" first="Riley" last="Stack"] – 2023 – Wren High School – Hurricanes coach Pam McGowens will have two more seasons to have opponents’ decks stacked against them with No. 4 listed at 6-foot-4. Stack uses every single bit of that height to her advantage. Having Stack patrol the interior forces teams into having to make jump shots the nucleus of an offensive attack because trying to score near the rim on Stack will almost certainly result in a blocked shot. She is also a proficient scorer, rebounder and, on one occasion, dribbled the ball from one end of the floor to the other for a layup. That accounted for two of her five points she had this game.
[player_tooltip player_id="260471" first="Tamyra" last="Davis"] – 2021 – Keenan High School – With her being in a senior season, Davis would love to conclude her high school career in more state championship style. Davis is versatile in her offensive approach in that she will give you a fair share of 2- and 3-point attempts. She was also the only Raider not named Fulwiley to have at least one field goal in every one of the contest’s four quarters. Davis added a 15-point effort to the Raiders cause – with eight of those 15 occurring in that dominating first quarter for Keenan. In that first quarter, she made two of her three triples she had on Monday night.
