We at Prep Girls Hoops were on hand for what was an exciting kickoff to the travel schedule (more to come in the coming months). Here is a look at some talents who made sure to outhustle their competition.
Maliyiah Mason Maliyiah Mason 6'0" | SF Gray Collegiate | 2023 State SC – Irmo HS – A’ja Wilson Elite 2022 – One thing is guaranteed whenever Mason takes the court – she will give her all and will keep playing until the final buzzer has sounded. Her bread and butter throughout her career has been her ability to drive into the basket, but she also will take (and make) her fair share of long range shots – either inside or outside of the perimeter. She will also rebound and make her free throws. Mason has proved herself to be one of those players that whenever she is in a game, opposing players and coaches always have to be on the lookout for where she is at all times.
Zhaire Mack – Philip Simmons HS – TMP 16U White – It is very hard for opposing teams to contain this Mack attack. Plenty of ballers throughout the game will make hustle plays. Mack’s can occur whether she is likely or unlikely to come away with the basketball as she will dive for loose balls against a slew of would-be ball carriers from an opposing team. Mack will put in plenty of work on the glass and it adds to an all-around defensive game that includes her ability to force opponents into turnovers. That athleticism translates into her being a dual sport athlete as part of the track and field team at Philip Simmons.
Mia Wysong – First Baptist School – TMP 17U Black – The TMP team of juniors had three on its squad that were worthy of mentions. One of the three is Wysong, who shined with her hustle plays as well as with her 3-point shot. Between her ability to provide that dynamic to a team and a willingness to absorb a charge, Wysong can be described as someone who does plenty of the little things that do not always appear on a stat line. She possesses passing ability in addition to a proficiency to hit baskets from anywhere on the floor and will also get out in transition after steals.
Kristen Jenkins Kristen Jenkins 5'9" | SF West Ashley | 2022 State SC – West Ashley HS – TMP 17U Black – Jenkins was the lone representative for West Ashley on this year’s 5A SCBCA All-State Team. Her play this past weekend proved exactly why she was a worthy recipient of the honor. Jenkins brings a great deal of energy to a team, that includes an ability to haul in an own rebound in case of a missed shot. A missed shot, though, for Jenkins appears to be a rarity – particularly from downtown. Jenkins will not give up on any play as she will work aplenty near the cup to make sure the ball goes through the hoop. Plenty of her free throw attempts go through that same hoop too and she is a defensive stalwart as well – including a talent for intercepting passes.
Alexia Grant Alexia Grant 5'11" | CG First Baptist | 2022 State SC – First Baptist – TMP 17U Black – Just as Charleston Swarm is big on Bishop England players, TMP 17U Black head coach Presley Singleton will have plenty of First Baptist Hurricanes players to work with – including Grant. She knows how to make things difficult for opponents with her hustle and defensive work – such as with her proficiency with blocking shots and stealing the ball. Jenkins is nifty with her shot selection and can make efficient passes as she will at times pass up shot opportunities to dish the rock out to a teammate that may be in better position to put up points. Grant also knows how to get out in transition and turn those opportunities into layups. Continue to be on the lookout for her.
