Continue ReadingThrough a delayed start, Covid cancellations and a snow/ice storm, we have actually neared the end of the season. Here’s a look at the favorites and contenders in each region (in my opinion).
First Region:
Favorite: Marshall County. The Lady Marshalls finished regular season 18-2 and undefeated against regional competition.
In the Mix: Graves County, McCracken County, Calloway County
Second Region:
Favorite: Henderson County. Last year’s champs are having another strong season and look like a tough out.
In the Mix: Crittenden County, Webster County
Third Region:
Favorite: Breckinridge County. They’ll be tested in a deep region but have the best odds to get out of region.
In the Mix: Apollo, Meade County, Owensboro Catholic, McLean County
Fourth Region:
Favorite: Bowling Green. The Purples are barely above .500 but have played one of the toughest schedules in the state to get ready for Rupp.
In the Mix: Barren County, Russell County, Greenwood
Fifth Region:
Favorite: Elizabethtown. 20-0 heading into the last week and have a shot to roll into Rupp with a perfect record.
In the Mix: Bethlehem, Bardstown
Sixth Region:
Favorite: Bullitt East. They have beaten most of the best in Louisville this season and just won the LIT but the region is really balanced.
In the Mix: Butler, Mercy
Seventh Region:
Favorite: Sacred Heart. This region is a total toss-up. I can see several teams with a shot at it.
In the Mix: Central, DuPont Manual, Male, CAL
Eighth Region:
Favorite: Anderson County. They are probably the heaviest regional favorite in the state. They’ll be hard to knock off.
In the Mix: Walton-Verona, South Oldham, Owen County
Ninth Region:
Favorite: Ryle. They’re still the reigning State Champs and are favored to get back to Rupp and defend their title.
In the Mix: Cooper, Dixie Heights, Notre Dame
Tenth Region:
Favorite: George Rogers Clark. The reigning 4x defending champs are going to be a tough out but they are beatable.
In the Mix: Montgomery County, Bishop Brossart, Paris, Scott
Eleventh Region:
Favorite: Franklin County. They’ve had a weird year with a long Covid shut down but they’re slight favorites over Dunbar.
In the Mix: Dunbar, Madison Southern, Great Crossing, Lafayette
Twelfth Region:
Favorite: Wayne County. This region is very open but Boyle has looked the best of all of them so far.
In the Mix: Southwestern, Pulaski County, Danville, Rockcastle County, Mercer County
Thirteenth Region:
Favorite: North Laurel. This region is as wide open as any. Lots of teams capable of cutting nets at the end.
In the Mix: Bell County, South Laurel, Whitley County, Pineville, Corbin, Clay County
Fourteenth Region:
Favorite: Owsley County. They’ve been fairly dominant this season and enter postseason as favorites.
In the Mix: Knott County Central, Leslie County, Letcher County Central
Fifteenth Region:
Favorite: Floyd Central? Who knows. This region is seriously wide open and very balanced. Whoever is playing the best that week is liable to win it.
In the Mix: Pikeville, Johnson Central, Belfry, Shelby Valley, Lawrence County, Paintsville
Sixteenth Region:
Favorite: Boyd County. They have the best player but they already lost to Russell. It’s likely to be one of those two repping the 16th at Rupp.
In the Mix: Russell, Lewis County, Ashland Blazer, West Carter.
