The teams that have multiple talented young ladies and a deep attack seem to work well together. Below we take a look at the top five teams that present the most depth around the State. Cabell Midland Cabell Midland presents a lot of skilled athleticism. They have multiple players comfortable with handling the ball. They like to spread you out and get one-on-one matchups heading to the basket. It all starts with the size presented by 6’1 2023 forward, [player_tooltip player_id="153413" first="Jazmyn" last="Wheeler"]. Wheeler, being one of the most versatile players in the State, can beat you whether that’s driving to the basket, posting up, or knocking down the three. With the talent Midland presents, it’s great to have someone like 2022 guard [player_tooltip player_id="153376" first="Rylee" last="Allie"]. Allie is a shifty guard who will beat you off the dribble and penetrate to either kick it out or finish at the rack. Then, 2023 guard, [player_tooltip player_id="153410" first="Jayda" last="Allie"], who is known for her three-point presence, is as talented as any ‘23’s in the state. What goes unnoticed is the defensive pressure she has created for ball handlers. Midland fills in the gaps with 2021 forward, [player_tooltip player_id="153335" first="Autumn" last="Lewis"], and 2022 forward, [player_tooltip player_id="153391" first="KK" last="Potter"]. Both versatile players can go inside or knock down threes from around the arc. These two are the glue to the team. Everyone needs a rest, but with the Knights, they don’t have to worry. Coming off the bench is young talent in 2024, Guard Sophi Aldridge, and 2024 Forward, Josi Graves, along with an experienced 2021 forward, Kaitlyn Wallis, who presents more length for the Knights defense. Cabell Midland has had a great season up to this point. If this team can knockdown shots they will have a chance at the title. George Washington George Washington is the team with balanced talent; it’s just a matter of how well they can keep all the pieces together. George Washington runs a very system-type offense, running plays to find easy and open looks. It starts with former state player of the year, Morehead State signee, Kalissa Lacy. Lacy, proven with leadership, can do it all for the Patriots. Mainly known for her sharpshooting from behind the arc, the Patriots like to get her as many open looks as possible. Pacing their offense is senior guard, [player_tooltip player_id="153350" first="Vivian" last="Ho"]. Ho being an aggressive offensive guard when getting by defenders, is headed straight to the basket, many times drawing fouls. Ho has a strong mid-range pull-up game and also can hit from behind the arc. The biggest surprise of this team and the class of 2024’s so far is definitely Finley Lohan. Lohan, a 5’10 guard has been a big help for this Patriots team. She has been knocking down the three consistently at a high percentage this year. Along with her length defensively, this one will be fun to watch develop. The inside game for George Washington is a bit undersized but not a quiet presence. With freshman Alaira Evans down low, she has been able to maneuver some impressive post moves along with finishing on either side. [player_tooltip player_id="153367" first="Mary" last="Lyle Smith"] returning to hoops has balanced this team out more as well as giving them more height. Lastly, if you’re looking to press the Patriots you just better be ready to cover. With the sharpshooting 2024 Macie Mallory finding the open area around the arc, it’s lights out. This George Washington team has been very consistent all season and should be a top contender for the title. Morgantown Morgantown could have what it takes to make a run in Charleston, but after an early-season Covid pause, the Mohigans have yet to find their team fully back playing their best basketball. The Morgantown girls basketball team has been winning games going 8-2 in the regular season but they have yet to get back fully in rhythm on their offensive attack. However, we will break down how the Mohigans have still got it done so far this season. Of course, for the Mohigans, it starts inside with DePaul signee, [player_tooltip player_id="153321" first="Kaitlyn" last="Ammons"]. A dominant force inside, she is hard to stop, usually needing double or triple teams to stop her inside scoring. The next thing is the experienced ball-handler in 2021 guard, [player_tooltip player_id="153349" first="Catherine" last="Wassick"], settling down the game in the half-court offense to run their plays. The glue holding this team are 2023 guard Lindsay Betchel, 2021 guard Berit Johnson, and 2022 forward Kerrington Peasak. All are great role players who do their job to make this team go. Also, Morgantown brings length defensively with 2023 guard Revaya Sweeney to slow down offensive attacks and get chances at steals. Lastly, for the Mohigans, 2024 guard Sofia Wassick with valuable minutes contributes to this well-rounded team. Overall, when this Morgantown team can knock down shots from behind the arc they seem to have it going for them. We know the inside attack is usually there for them and defensively they can hold their own. North Marion North Marion has been one of the top “AAA” teams all season. They bring an upbeat tempo to the game. A team that likes to get out and run to get easy baskets with some depth to do so. Starting with 5’9 sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id="153426" first="Olivia" last="Toland"], Toland is quite the go-to scorer for this Huskies team. She is known for being consistent from behind the arc along with her speed to get downhill on defenders. Their next key piece is their leader, [player_tooltip player_id="153342" first="Karlie" last="Denham"]. The senior brings in a lot of skill with long-range shooting and pressuring the opponents’ offense. She has a nose to get to the basket and finishing as well. Looking down low they have 5’10 junior forward, [player_tooltip player_id="153389" first="Katlyn" last="Carson"]. Carson, who has had some of the injury bug this season is a huge piece for the Huskies. She is known for her shot-blocking and earning the Huskies their second-chance points. Hopefully, Carson can return to this talented North Marion squad this postseason. Those three are the key players for the Huskies, with some new names becoming known. Sophomore forward, Brenna Wilfong has stepped up and played key minutes while Carson has been out. Freshman guards, Kennedy Beaty and Emma Freels have also shown some quality time for the Huskies this season. Wyoming East Wyoming East is another talented, spread-out team. They have multiple pieces that can be used which is the biggest thing is keeping them all together. It begins up-front with the leadership of Glenville State signee, [player_tooltip player_id="153325" first="Skylar" last="Davidson"]. Davidson, one of the smaller guards, uses her speed to her ability. She can get her shots from wherever offensively, but is defensively a quick, scrappy, player looking for steals. The biggest help for this team is leadership. With senior forward, Sarah Saunders on the court, it helps this team a lot. Saunders is the glue to this team, battling for boards and bringing the energy. Then, adding the length of a very athletic, 2022 forward, [player_tooltip player_id="153388" first="Daisha" last="Summers"] to the mix speeds up this team. Summers, presents a very active defensive presence along with an attacking offensive game. Looking for their three-point shooter in 2022 forward [player_tooltip player_id="153409" first="Hannah" last="Blankenship"], is very comfortable from beyond the arc. The other main three to keep an eye out for are freshman forward Madison Clark and sophomore guards [player_tooltip player_id="153433" first="Abby" last="Russell"] and Colleen Lookabill.
