There will be some fantastic guards that college coaches, scouts, and fans may want to check out. Let’s take a look at 10 of the guards to watch at the Great Lakes Challenge.
Lauren DeWolf Lauren DeWolf CG Ann Arbor Pioneer | 2022 State MI (2022, CG, Athlete Headquarters 2022, Ann Arbor Pioneer)
I list DeWolf as a combo guard, but I can really see her running the point at the next level. She is a fantastic on ball defender and might be one of the top 2 way players at the event.
Teja Kapp (2023, SG, MSF Flight 2023, Jackson Northwest)
Kapp has made a statement so far in grassroots season. She’s let it be known that her jumper is dangerous and defenders have to be aware of her. Kapp can fire off and bury a 3 at any time.
Layla Marshall Layla Marshall 5'8" | SG Westfield Prep | 2024 State MI (2024, SG, Hype Athletics 2024, Westfield Prep)
There is some serious player development happening at Westfield Prep right now and Marshall is a great example of that. In typical Hype style, she’s turning into a top notch defender.
Erayna Moorer (2025, SG, Hype Athletics 2025)
I haven’t seen her in person yet, but word out of the gym is good. I’m looking forward to judging for myself.
Shamya Reid Shamya Reid 5'5" | PG Westfield Prep | 2023 State MI (2023, PG, Hype Athletics 2023, Westfield Prep)
Reid is an absolute must see lead guard. She has good hip movement and ball handling which makes it tough for basically any defender to stay in front of her. She’ll be faced with a big shot this weekend, and I’m predicting that she’ll take it and make it.
Grace Robidou (2024, SG, MSF Flight 2024, Stockbridge)
Robidou has shown some real potential as a knockdown shooter. It’s easy to see why she played some quality varsity minutes in high school this season.
Nykesha Sanders Nykesha Sanders 5'7" | PG Chandler Park | 2021 State MI (2021, PG, Hype Athletics 2022, Chandler Park)
Sanders is very quick with the ball and can catch defenders leaning with her ball handling skills. Sanders has developed a mean defensive game and can play at a fast pace.
Brook Simpson Brook Simpson 5'10" | SG Saugatuck | 2024 State MI (2024, CG, UTS Elite 2024, Belding)
Simpson was one of the best all around freshman in the state last high school season. She’s incredibly versatile with a well rounded game. Simpson has the look of a high major talent.
Marianna Vanagtmael (2023, SG, Hardwood Midwest 2022, Hart)
Vanagtmael is playing up but it’s hard to tell. She’s already a solid high school level scorer and it looks like her game is on the verge of taking that next jump.
Nevaeh Williams Nevaeh Williams 5'5" | CG Mt. Clemens | 2022 State MI (2022, CG, Michigan Goonies 2022, Mt. Clemens)
Williams is a firecracker with the ball. She can get down the floor with the ball in no time, often beating the defense back and picking up high percentage transition buckets.
