Now that the grassroots season is in full swing, teams and individuals are really beginning to hit their stride and show what they are capable of.
With that in mind, here are five standout 2022 prospects from the tournament:
Ada Anamekwe | 2022 | 5’11” Small Forward/Power Forward | DC Queens (White) | Plano East HS – Anamekwe displayed fabulous two-way versatility on Saturday. She scored when attacking off the dribble from the wing as well as when posting up defenders on the block. The combo forward also showed that she can score with her mid-range jumper from the elbows. On defense, she guarded multiple positions, blocked shots, and defended the length of the floor while utilizing her length to trap opposing ball handlers. This is one of those players who can impact the game in so many ways.
Jamyia Montgomery | 2022 | 5’8” Shooting Guard/Small Forward | Team Lex Supreme | Atlanta HS – Montgomery showed a wide variety of offensive skills this weekend. She is an energetic and bouncy player who explodes when driving to the basket. Her athleticism and physicality serve her well as a rebounder too. Additionally, the 2022 prospect was a serviceable spot-up shooter from mid to long range, affording her some extra space to do what she does best, slash her way to the rim and finish through traffic.
Kassi Ballard | 2022 | 5’5” Combo Guard | True Texas Hoops 2022 | Ponder HS – Ballard put together a brilliant two-way performance in her Saturday afternoon contest. The Ponder guard played like her hair was on fire, flying around and getting into passing lanes on defense and subsequently turning that into instant offense. She was decisive as a facilitator and a knock down shooter from a few steps behind the three-point line, evidenced by back-to-back deep triples at the end of the half. Furthermore, Ballard was great about communicating with her teammates on the floor.
Kamen Wong | 2022 | 5’3” Point Guard | Flight 9 Elite Gravely | Frisco Liberty HS – Wong may be on the shorter side, but I can confidently say that she is one of the most consistent and polished prospects that I’ve seen over the past few years. She is a fantastic decision maker, an accurate distributor, and a capable scorer from multiple levels. The Liberty floor general has always been so good at producing within the flow of the offense, and she did exactly that on Saturday. She read defenses beautifully and made terrific finds as a passer while also shooting well from deep. In addition, Wong’s off-ball movement was excellent. I’ve said it several times but I will say it once again, keep your eyes on this one!
Da’Lonna Choice | 2022 | 5’6” Shooting Guard | Team Lex Loaded | Mesquite Horn HS – Choice’s team fell behind by double digits early in their second matchup of the tournament, but the soon-to-be senior guard remained aggressive and ultimately led her team to a 21-point victory. She made some adjustments to her game and continuously got downhill on offense, resulting in high-percentage looks and trips to the foul line. I loved seeing her refuse to settle for jumpers and fearlessly attack the basket. Beyond that, Choice made some good passes and handled the ball comfortably when playing at the one spot.
