Although I didn’t get to watch every team, I was still treated to brilliant performances by teams and individuals from a variety of age groups.
With that in mind, here are some of the best combo guards from the tournament:
Taylor Thomas | 2022 | 5’8” Combo Guard | DC Queens WTX Blue | Canyon HS – Thomas was a phenomenal slasher on Tuesday in Mansfield. The Canyon guard looked extremely poised whenever she was on the court, confidently slicing through defenses and making toughly contested layups. She is dangerous in the open court. Her passing was excellent as well. She threaded the needle and zipped passes into the paint with ease.
Shandlee Mueller | 2022 | 5’6” Combo Guard | West Texas Shockers 17U | Stamford HS – Mueller has a shooters mentality. Her short memory is a good thing too, because she can light it up from beyond the arc once she gets into a rhythm. She looked good when creating for herself, utilizing jab steps and ball fakes to gain extra space. The Stamford prospect was also great at getting herself squared up before releasing shots. Additionally, she thrived at getting to the hoop via dribble handoffs.
Jasmin Holt | 2023 | 5’9” Combo Guard | Bonafide Gold ’23 | Chapin HS – Holt made some big-time plays for her team to earn a comeback win on Tuesday. She made a contested runner and was responsible for a chase-down block. Both of those moments significantly shifted the momentum in favor of her team. The 2023 guard even sealed the victory with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of the contest. She wasn’t afraid to step up in the defining moments of the game, which says a lot about her mentality. Beyond that, she was productive on the defensive boards.
Kaelyn Hamilton Kaelyn Hamilton 5'10" | SF McKinney North | 2024 State TX | 2024 | 5’8” Combo Guard | NTX Lady Elite 2024 | McKinney North HS – Unsurprisingly, Hamilton was once again a standout performer. Despite struggling early on in her Wednesday afternoon matchup, she got herself on track in the second half and took over the game when her team needed her most. Furthermore, the McKinney North guard went 5-for-6 from the foul line to close the game. She was more aggressive as a scorer than the last few times I’ve seen her, putting the ball in the basket from all three levels. Hamilton made sure to leave her fingerprints on the victory.
Brenna Howard | 2024 | 5’7” Combo Guard | Lady Stangs Black | S & S Consolidated HS – Howard is a slashing guard with a high motor. She was fantastic at attacking the basket off the dribble and finishing from difficult angles. The soon-to-be sophomore plays downhill and isn’t afraid to go right at defenders. She also showed that she is capable of throwing on the brakes to knock down pull up jumpers from mid-range.
Kennedi Holmes | 2024 | 5’8” Combo Guard | UHE 15U Elite | Crandall HS – Holmes delivered numerous passes with pinpoint accuracy. Her vision was fabulous as well. She was unselfish when operating as the lead guard and kept the ball hopping. The Crandall guard made good decisions in transition, recognizing when her team had a numbers advantage. She was responsible for some strong takes to the basket too, showing shiftiness and good burst when turning the corner.
