As I said over there, I think you need to be able to knock down some outside shots. It’s hard to achieve on basic field goals alone. Moreover, good teams with two or more great players tend to deviate the scoring. Obviously, that is not a bad thing!
Let’s get right into my picks…
Ashley Martinez Ashley Martinez 5'4" | SG Somerset Silver Palms Academy | 2026 State FL – Somerset Academy Silver Palms
2026 Ashley Martinez Ashley Martinez 5'4" | SG Somerset Silver Palms Academy | 2026 State FL finished tenth in the state in 3-pointers made (71) last season. Moreover, she shot 40 percent or better from deep in twelve games. While impressive, Martinez needs to be a bit more consistent. Overall, she shot 36 percent from the field and had a number of games where she finished below 30 percent. However, Martinez showed enough flash to be on our radar. For example, Martinez scored 19 points and went 5-of-10 from deep against state champion St. Thomas Aquinas. Again, she is just an eight grader.
Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL – American Heritage
Shaw is one of the region’s top players. The 5-foot-10 combo guard is a three-level scoring machine and tough to defend. Shaw shot 50 percent from the floor and a highly impressive 47 percent from deep. She is a top 10 player regardless of class in the state. Worth noting, American Heritage lost three seniors from last year’s state championship team. Could that mean more opportunities? Shaw is a threat every time she has the ball in her hands.
Aly Avrach Aly Avrach 5'8" | CG Spanish River | 2022 State FL – Spanish River
Avrach had some big games last season for Spanish River. The 5-foot-8 guard scored 30 or more points in three games and averaged 21.5 per contest. Avrach hit seven 3-pointers against Palm Beach Lakes (33 points) and knocked down eight against Leonard (34 points). Overall, I did not see many bad games from her on paper. She also went a respectable 79 percent from the free-throw line. Watch out for her rebounding ability as well. Avrach grabbed ten or more rebounds in three games. Extra possessions could lead to more opportunities to score.
Alancia Ramsey Alancia Ramsey 6'0" | PF St Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State FL – American Heritage Delray
Ramsey is one player that doesn’t need a 3-pointer to hit this mark. The bottom line is she’s a dominant post player and walking double-double. Ramsey scored 30 or more points in three games last season and shot 73! percent or better in each of those contests. She might be the most reliable scorer inside the key in the region. One area she can work on to add points is her free-throw shooting. Ramsey went 55-of-91 (60 percent) from the line. If that improves…how do you stop her?
Taja Stephens Taja Stephens 5'8" | CG Western | 2022 State FL – Western
Stephens came fairly close with 31 points on 13-of-16 from the field against Fort Lauderdale last season. At 5-foot-8, she certainty has the versatility to score at guard or forward. Behind the arc, Stephens shot 40 percent or better in six games. I would also add she is a good free-throw shooter. Most of her games show her shooting around 80 percent with a decent number of attempts. Stephens is also an excellent offensive and defensive rebounder thanks to her length and athleticism. Stephens recorded 136 boards for the Wildcats.
Michiyah Simmons Michiyah Simmons 5'8" | PG Blanche Ely | 2022 State FL – Blanche Ely
Simmons scored a season-high 34 points against Deerfield Beach last season. The problem she might have is her supporting cast is so good. The Lady Tigers have three or four plays that could score 15 points each night. However, Simmons did shoot over 50 percent and recorded a handful of games with two or more 3-pointers. Her scoring prowess might give her a shot for a night.
