The invite only event was packed with elite, ranked, and soon to be ranked players. There was high level basketball all over the gym, so I will give you 5 players that stood out to me.
* There was such a vast amount of quality basketball last night, that I’m making it my mission to cover every single player at the event. If you don’t see your name here, no worries, it’s just a matter of time.
Kara Bartels Kara Bartels 6'3" | PF Zeeland West | 2023 State MI
Bartels was an absolute force in the paint. She battled for position with her back to the basket a couple steps inside the free throw line. When she was fed the ball, she went to work from there. Bartels showed a variety of aggressive and effective post moves at Flight Hankamp. I’ve always thought that Bartels had great post footwork, but combined with that nastiness and physicality in the paint…..watch out.
Kalin Bates Kalin Bates 5'4" | CG Livonia Franklin | 2022 State MI
Bates was absolutely terrific at Flight Hankamp last night. She shot the lights out from beyond the arc. I counted 5, and those are just what I saw as I scanned the gym. There had to be more. When Bates fired up a jumper, you could tell that she expected it to go in every time. She sent a very real message last night.
Hailey Freshcorn Hailey Freshcorn 5'8" | PG Columbia Central | 2024 State MI
Freshcorn is a player that I’ve been VERY high on since early grassroots season. She’s a point guards kind of point guard. Last night, Freshcorn showed that she can play as a bucket getting lead guard as well as a pass first point that hits teammates that are in good scoring positions. She’s underrated as a ball handler and a creator.
Morganne Houk Morganne Houk 5'7" | SG Plymouth Christian Academy | 2023 State MI
Houk really stood out to me at Flight Hankamp. She showed a very diversified game last night. We all know that Houk can shoot from beyond the arc, but her scoring came from other avenues at the event. She had a swooping drive across the free throw line that led to a mid range jumper that she buried even with a hand in her face. Houk put the ball on the floor on the baseline and drove through her defender for a bucket.
Faith Jungwirth Faith Jungwirth 6'0" | SF Lansing Catholic | 2024 State MI
Jungwirth ended grassroots season on a tear and she continued that streak at Flight Hankamp. There were PLENTY of times last night when you could have easily said that she was the most influential player in the gym. Jungwirth was very physical on both ends of the floor and made it very tough for opponents to get easy looks under the rim. She was so active on the offensive glass and that created tons of high percentage looks at the rim. College coaches are going to want to take a long hard look at Jungwirth this high school season.
