Senate Bill 128 offered high school students the opportunity to re-do a year of high school thanks to the Covid-19 Pandemic. As a result, student athletes from across the Commonwealth are using the extra year to take another shot at athletic scholarships. Here’s a look at some players who have taken advantage of the bonus year. If I missed a player, it’s likely because I wasn’t aware they had reclassed.

Corbin has 4 players taking advantage of the bonus year. 2021 Seniors [player_tooltip player_id="321710" first="Lauren" last="Faulkner"] and [player_tooltip player_id="154515" first="Shelby" last="Stewart"] are both impact players. Stewart, especially. Shelby averaged 16 points per game last season and will be a top player in the 13th this season.
Danville’s chances in the 12th region improved with the return of [player_tooltip player_id="321714" first="Jenna" last="Akers"] and [player_tooltip player_id="321715" first="Lara" last="Akers"]. The twins combined for over 20 points per game and shot better than 35% from three. Lara was Danville’s leading scorer last season and will be in the mix for top 2022 in the region.
[player_tooltip player_id="88449" first="Lexy" last="Lynch"] of Owsley County is back and looking to lead a run to Rupp Arena with one of Kentucky’s most high powered offenses in the Lady Owls. Lynch was the leading scorer for Owsley last season at just under 20 points per game and they’ll be the favorite to win the 14th this season.

Central’s [player_tooltip player_id="106147" first="Amaya" last="Asher"] was the biggest name in the group of players going from 2022 to 2023. Amaya has been a consistent top guard in Louisville and said she is taking the extra year to help her recruiting. There’s no doubt Asher can play at the scholarship level and the extra year should help show that.
Great Crossing’s [player_tooltip player_id="222954" first="Rachel" last="Smith"] is known as a shooter and an extra year of high school ball for an always improving Great Crossing team should help her recruiting a great deal. Smith has made several campus visits lately and should be on the receiving end of some offers soon.
[player_tooltip player_id="259217" first="Austin" last="Johnson"] of Ryle was the X factor for Ryle last season and an extra year should allow her to keep improving her offensive game to catch up with her lockdown defense. Ryle is always in the mix to win the 9th region and an extra year of [player_tooltip player_id="259217" first="Austin" last="Johnson"] will certainly help in that department.
