43 athletes from three states and six grade classes attended an exposure event at the Wichita Sports Forum Saturday, September 4. Offered by World Exposure Report, players were put through the paces of several challenging drills led by club and college coaches as well as others. The players broke up into four teams and finished the afternoon playing each other. Below are brief notes I gathered on players from the 2022 class.
[player_tooltip player_id="125021" first="Jaley" last="Barkley"], 5’7", PG, Cair Paravel Latin School, Wheat State Elite - Barkley had among the strongest events of any player. She showed good quickness and lateral speed. She closed out with balance and speed. She combined a terrific crossover dribble with a strong first step, an ability to finish well with either hand, and the creativity to set up and hit spot-up shooters while slashing in the half- and full-court. The new Kaw Valley League can pencil her in now on the first team.
[player_tooltip player_id="124980" first="Asia" last="Dawson"], 5’5", SG, Wichita East, SSA GameBall Basketball - [player_tooltip player_id="124980" first="Asia" last="Dawson"]’s ability to close out with quickness and balance stood out. She also showed a quick release and ability to elevate on a corner three that caught nothing but net.
[player_tooltip player_id="191199" first="Aubree" last="Dawson"], 5’5", SG, Wichita East, SSA Gameball Basketball - [player_tooltip player_id="191199" first="Aubree" last="Dawson"] showed terrific lateral quickness and an ability to split defenders off the bounce to finish.
[player_tooltip player_id="94032" first="Bree" last="Horyna"], 5’9", SF, Liberal, SSA GameBall Basketball - The one-on-one make-it take-it drill set the tone for Horyna’s ability to combine her quick first step, physicality, and perimeter shooting. In full court action her transition speed, including with the ball, really popped.
[player_tooltip player_id="93974" first="Emajin" last="McCallop"], 5’8", PG, Bishop Miege, Missouri Phenom - It has been nearly a year since I have seen McCallop’s game in person. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her strong close-out and first step quickness again. Her ability to alter her arch on mid-range pull-up jumpers over challenging bigs for scores was very strong.
[player_tooltip player_id="124987" first="Brynn" last="McCormick"], 5’8", SG/PG, Cheney, Twin Lakes Stars - McCormick has long had a reputation as shooter. What impressed me was her quickness and balance on her close-outs. That ability set the tone for her consistent defensive work.
[player_tooltip player_id="173426" first="Stevi" last="Yancy"], 5’4", SG, Raytown (MO), Della Lamb - Closing out with quickness and balance was strong but what separated her from most was her speed and agility to change directions.
