Often times at showcases, it can become an offensive showcase where defense takes a backseat. Not at Flight Hankamp. With the old fashioned basketball feel, there is a lot of pride that comes from a big play or stop on the defensive end. Here are just a few of the players that stood out defensively at Flight Hankamp.
Tadassa Brown Tadassa Brown 6'4" | C Brooklyn Columbia Central | 2022 State MI (2022, Brooklyn Columbia Central)
Brown should probably be considered an elite post defender in the midwest. She has a nose for the ball when it goes up and plays defense well vertically. Teams will simply have to play around Brown.
Hailey Freshcorn Hailey Freshcorn 5'8" | PG Columbia Central | 2024 State MI (2024, Onsted)
Freshcorn is a really high energy and intensity player on the defensive end. She aggressively seeks turnovers, but does it in a controlled manner. When Freshcorn sees an opportunity at a swipe, it’s like she’s shot out of a cannon.
Aubree Meyer (2024, Hartland)
Meyer did some really nice things defensively at Flight Hankamp. I liked the way she denied the entry pass into the post. Meyer angled herself in front of her opponent and slapped the ball away when they tried to feed the post.
Charlotte Miller (2025, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard)
Miller just looked so comfortable on the defensive end. Her footwork and defensive IQ were definitely evident when watching her play. By the time it’s all said and done, she could be a bona fide high school stopper.
Mara Mitchell (2024, Jackson Northwest)
Mitchell has really impressed me in both of the Flight Hankamp Open Runs. Her underrated natural athleticism helps her a lot defensively. Mitchell stays so active under the rim and that helps her be a nuisance defensively.
Anna McCollum (2023, Brooklyn Columbia Central)
McCollum made it very clear that she takes pride in her defense. She keeps a low base and really digs in on that end. McCollum can play nose-to-nose defense and put a lot of pressure on the ball handler. Her defense really forces the action.
