What programs could flip its fortune in 2021? Here are some of my picks.
Gulliver Prep – (Last season: 6-8)
The Raiders lost five straight games to close out the 2020 season. In my opinion, I don’t see that sort of skid happening this year. Why? Health and another year of experience for its top players. 2022 wing/forward Riana Doctor is a good player when healthy. Doctor can play inside-out and is a good mid-range shooter. The 5-foot-11 prospect averaged 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds across seven games as a junior. She should have a mismatch more often than not. 2023 point guard Madison Aguilera Madison Aguilera 5'3" | PG Gulliver Prep | 2023 State FL averaged nearly 16 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the field. Aguilera is quick and a solid playmaker at the point. In addition, she can shoot the three from anywhere on the floor. Aguilera played well over the summer and that should carry over.
Florida Christian – (Last season: 7-11)
The Patriots lost six of their 11 games by 28 total points last season (4.7 ppg). Granted, the other five were a little rough. One thing I noticed was its win and loss over Marathon. Florida Christian beat the Dolphins by 19 and lost by 31 later in the season. Regardless of the circumstances, Florida Christian will look need be more consistent in 2021. 2022 Isabella Lopez (12.1 ppg) should be back. The 5-foot-6 guard is an adequate rebounder with 3-point ability. A few seniors will need to be replaced that played key roles.
Deerfield Beach – (Last season: 5-8)
If you take away games against Blanche Ely and Dillard, the Bucks didn’t play all that bad. Quite frankly, many opponents will have tough nights against the Tigers and Panthers. 2024 Arielle Facyson should be back. The 5-foot-6 guard averaged 13.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while being named honorable mention by the Sun Sentinel. 2021 Aaliyah Reid Aaliyah Reid 5'9" | SG Deerfield Beach | 2021 State FL (16.8 ppg) is a tough loss for Deerfield Beach. Per its roster, the Bucks have a group of 2023’s and 2024’s that have a chance to step up.
Santaluces – (Last season: 5-8)
The Chiefs should still be a good team despite the transfer of Janessa Williams to King’s Academy. Santaluces lost three games by a combined 14 points. As I previously mentioned, they are a team to watch regardless of last seasons outcome.
Palm Beach Central – (Last season: 8-10)
With or without fans, Palm Beach Central went 1-5 at home. Winning on your home court is always helpful when trying to have a successful season. The Broncos will look to flip the script in 2021. 2024 E’Zaria Adams E’Zaria Adams 5'8" | SF Palm Beach Central | 2023 State FL averaged nearly 14 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the field. 2024 Tamia Coleman is a 6-foot-2 center. 2023 Deborah Jean is a 5-foot-10 forward. Palm Beach Central has some length on its roster it can develop.
