I was able to check out games at both the Lady Raiders Preseason Classic held at Orange Park High School and the Al Austin Preseason Classic held at Ribault High School. There was a whole lot of talent on display. If this preseason action is any indication of how the season will play out, we are in for a treat. Most games had a playoff-like atmosphere and we even had a buzzer-beater. Let’s take a look at some of the top posts from preseason action in Northeast Florida.
Nia Blocton Nia Blocton 6'0" | PF Ridgeview | 2024 State FL – Ridgeview | ’24
Nia is an emerging young talent and is an up-and-coming post player in Northeast Florida. She has a great motor and always seems to be around the ball. Nia plays like she thinks every loose ball is hers, going after every rebound and diving on the ground for every 50-50 ball. She also finishes well around the basket. Nia has already shown signs of growth in her game. She is good at passing out of the double team to find open teammates for the outside shot.
Nia Brown Nia Brown 5'11" | PF Orange Park | 2022 State FL – Orange Park | ’22
Nia looks primed to have a huge senior season. She can play with her back to the basket on the post and step outside and knock down a three. Everything looks smooth and effortless for her so far in the preseason. She is an elite defender and has an evolving offensive package that will make her tough to guard. She is one-half of a dynamic duo alongside super sophomore Eris Lester Eris Lester 5'10" | SF Montverde Academy | 2024 State FL . They both can score in bunches so it’s kind of a pick your poison thing for opposing teams.
Clare Coyle Clare Coyle 6'1" | PF Bishop Kenny | 2024 State FL – Bishop Kenny | ’24
Clare is a rebounding machine and one of the best defenders in the area. She is an excellent screen-setter and moves well without the ball. No one will outwork her on the court. Clare has also looked to increase her production on offense which will be needed with the departure of Jasmyne Roberts and teams likely to try and force the ball out of Maddie Millar Maddie Millar 5'9" | CG Bishop Kenny | 2022 State FL ’s hands. She pairs well with fellow sophomore Sydney Roundtree Sydney Roundtree 6'0" | PF Bishop Kenny | 2024 State FL down low and together will give opposing posts players nightmares on both ends of the floor.
Ellie Jackson – Mandarin | ’22
Ellie is known as a volleyball player, having already committed to Emmanuel College to play volleyball, but was very solid in the post for her team during the preseason. She has a variety of moves to get open and score in the paint. She plays much bigger than she is and defends the post well at her size.
Jada Jones Jada Jones 6'4" | PF Sandalwood | 2023 State FL – Sandalwood | ’23
It’s only preseason and teams have already started to double team her which led to her teammates being wide open for jump shots. Jada still found a way to impact the game by getting teammates involved and being a force on the defensive end. She also showed that she is able to score even when double-teamed. She is becoming more aggressive on both ends of the floor which only makes her more dangerous and will ultimately lead to more opportunities for her teammates to score.
