Continue ReadingI tweeted out recently about the lack of freshmen on rosters I’ve run across and since many teams finally gave in to allowing them to play on the varsity squad since I’ve been out here, almost 20 years, it ties into how I say the Houston area has changed. Some debated me, just because they wanted to say something yet ignorance always makes me laugh when I drop the data and usually I’m not going to be adamant about what I say because I actually know yet here are some of the standouts from part 1 of the season, part 2 is district play, part 3 is the playoffs so here we go and since our lone Houston paper SUCKS and has for over 15 years with their GBB coverage, I found stats on Max Preps
Aniyah Foy Aniyah Foy 6'0" | SG Cinco Ranch | 2025 State TX -6’0 SG (Cinco Ranch)
Foy is long and athletic, if you don’t remember anything else I say, remember that is the base and with her ability to handle the ball under pressure and score both off the dribble as well as mid to long-range, she has helped Cinco Ranch be in a good position for a deep run in the playoffs. She defends baseline to baseline and plays the passing lane and is averaging over 13 ppg
Nataliyah Gray Nataliyah Gray 6'3" | PF Alief Taylor | 2025 State TX -6’2 PF (Alief Taylor)
Gray has no GRAY area on what she’s going to become because she too is “long and athletic” with a college-ready body right now. Her finishes are often acrobatic, players literally hanging on her mean nothing because of her power and strength yet her going after EVERYTHING off the rim deserves #THROWBACK because that’s something you can’t teach, she averaging a shade under 19 ppg
Rezia Castillo Rezia Castillo 5'7" | PG Clear Brook | 2025 State TX -5’7 PG (Clear Brook)
Castillo is scoring over 11 pg yet her field goal percentage is 45% which equates to so many things that stand out but what really stands out, even more, is her “court vision” and explosiveness with the ball, keep in mind I called her a #D1Lock in the second grade, the youngest after my daughter who I said would be that at birth, and I haven’t been wrong yet
Andrea Sturdivant-5’7 CG (Fort Bend Austin)
Sturdivant impressed me so much as a 5th grader I dropped #D1Lock on her, why asked the novice, because it was not what she was doing, it was who she was doing it against and her poise against high school players heading to college said it all. She’s averaging over 18 ppg yet she’s also one of the top 3 freshmen in 3 pointers, wait, TOP FIVE IN TEXAS with 47 three pointers
Bree Riley-5’6 CG (Grand Oaks)
Riley has been blistering defenders after jumping into the starting lineup, I think her 26 points helped initiate the move in one game yet she’s averaging over 15 ppg. She creates her shot, under pressure and drops the mid to long-range with a hand in her face yet her first step is nothing to be played with because she blows by defenders with a variety of moves, including the HEZ to get wherever she wants
Margan Allen-5’7 CG (Grand Oaks)
Allen and Riley are the backcourt of the future in the Houston area, maybe Texas, and it’s becoming more apparent that the future is now as they are adjusting to the speed and punishment yet Allen is just under double-digits scoring per game, her mere presence on the court is worth something because she’s heady, she defends and she understands how to control the tempo when she’s at the 1
Ayla McDowell-6’0 SF/SG (Cy Springs)
McDowell was a player I knew nothing about and after being hidden in club ball, it took me less than 2 minutes to know what I was looking at, Carolyn Peck taught me that, yet she’s averaging almost 16 ppg yet peep this, she’s shooting 47% from the field so that means almost half of her shots are going to go in but she’s long and athletic, can drop the 3, rebounds and plays the passing lane
