The Spencer County Lady Bears play the game at such a high tempo that at times they made me consider getting my vision checked because they were sometimes blurry. (I think it was mainly the lighting but their speed didn’t help.)
The Lady Dragons from South Oldham High School were relentlessly efficient in their offensive sets and scrappy on defense rebounding as a team for a team lacking in size.
Ella Morrison Ella Morrison 5'8" | SG South Oldham | 2024 State KY – ’24 5’8″/CG – South Oldham
Morrison gets her hands on everything tie-ups, loose balls, and rebounds finishing the game with 6 (averaging 7.4 rebounds per game). She was a terror from the Wing area, curling into the lane on the left-handed dribble or curling in from the wing without the ball or crashing the glass from the wing or knocking down three-point shots from the wing or corner. Twice she scored through contact and made the free-throw after to complete the 3-point play.
Averaging 10 points per game in the four other contests of the season Morrison finished the game with 25 points on 3 of 4 shooting from three-point range and making all 8 of her free throws (shooting 83% at the line for the season).
Sierra Kemelgor Sierra Kemelgor 5'8" | CG South Oldham | 2022 State KY – ’22 5’8″/SG – South Oldham
Averaging 21.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, Kemelgor brought her game finishing with 17 points and 7 rebounds. She made threes from the corner and top, scored on a dive cut to the hoop, scored through contact on the break, and was scrappy going after a loose ball. On one play she picked off a pass during the press made a great move with a fake pass to freeze the defense right before a layup.
Natalie Betz – ’23 5’6″/SG – South Oldham
Betz has been a serious threat from three-point range for the season averaging 47.8″ three-point shooting for the season. She made 5 of 8 on the night I was there from the wing and the corner to bring her team 17 points in the outing banking in 1 three at the halftime buzzer.
She also contributes by feeding the cutter in the offense, penetrating into the lane to find open teammates, and scoring on baseline drives to lay the ball off the glass.
Skylar Mills – ’24 5’6″/CG – Spencer County
Mills is credited for scored 9 points making a wing three on a kick-out pass, a 15 footer on another post kick pass, and was fouled shooting a three and made all three free-throws (making 4 fo 5 for the day).
Lexi Runion – ’23 5’6″/PG – Spencer County
Runion pushes the tempo for a team that plays at a frenetic pace. She scored on a left-hand curl drive into the lane fr a 4 footer, made 10 footer from the corner, and a three from the top and from the wing. She finished the game grabbing 4 rebounds and scoring 16 points on 2 of 3 shooting from three-point range.
One of the best plays I witnessed was her stealing the ball and scoring through hard contact with a reverse layup and finishing off the play with the “and one” free throw. She is averaging 11 points per game and shooting 76% at the foul stripe.
