In part two of my notes from day one at the Luke Roth Showcase in Eugene, Oregon I will share takeaways from the South Medford vs. St. Mary’s showdown. The game resulted in a blowout win for South Medford as they showed more depth of talent in their roster, but there was an individual matchup that myself and some local Division 1 college coaches were in attendance for. Oregon State, Oregon and Portland were among those in attendance for this highly anticipated matchup.
<h5><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>2022 5’10 SG [player_tooltip player_id="158513" first="Abby" last="Graham"] will be a great pickup for a Division 1 program</strong></span></h5>
Unsigned senior [player_tooltip player_id="158513" first="Abby" last="Graham"] was a consistent performer throughout the weekend. She is highly skilled with the ball in her hands and has the ability to get her shot off consistently. She utilizes euro steps, same hand, same foot finishes and much more to finish creatively in the paint. She is strong with the ball and also scores in transition well, finishing with 12 points in this game. She is a Division 1 level recruit that is still available.
<h5><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>2023 6’0 SG [player_tooltip player_id="158538" first="Sofia" last="Bell"] is a high level shooter</strong></span></h5>
The 6’0 Oregon commit fits into the mold of a recruit that Oregon likes with height and shooting ability. [player_tooltip player_id="158538" first="Sofia" last="Bell"] only needs an inch of space to get her shot off and she is a truly high level three point shooter. St. Mary’s did a lot of ball screens and re-screening and South Medford did not hedge or double the screen much. Whenever the hedge man didn’t step up, she knocked down threes consistently. Bell hit five threes on her way to 19 points for St. Mary’s in front of three of her future coaches at Oregon.
<h5><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>2023 6’0 PG [player_tooltip player_id="158543" first="Donovyn" last="Hunter"] - Day One MVP</strong></span></h5>
Pac-12 recruit [player_tooltip player_id="158543" first="Donovyn" last="Hunter"] made a statement in the St. Mary’s game. She led South Medford in scoring with a career high 35 points, but she also took on the defensive assignment against Bell, played the top of South Medford’s press and assisted to teammates. Her all around impact on the game was apparent and she looked every bit the part of a player that should be ranked much higher nationally.
