I was able to check out games at both the Lady Raiders Preseason Classic held at Orange Park High School and the Al Austin Preseason Classic held at Ribault High School. There was a whole lot of talent on display and some games that had a playoff-type atmosphere. There was even a buzzer-beater that had the whole crowd hyped. Let’s take a look at some of the top guards from the competitive preseason action in Northeast Florida.
Piera Alexander – Orange Park | ’24
Piera has taken a giant leap from her freshman year to sophomore year and has stepped into the much-needed role of point guard for her team. She has a good handle on the ball and is good at setting her teammates up to score. This will free up teammates Eris Lester Eris Lester 5'10" | SF Montverde Academy | 2024 State FL and Nia Brown Nia Brown 5'11" | PF Orange Park | 2022 State FL to play more off the ball as they had most of the ball-handling duties last year. She can also create offense for herself off the dribble and is capable of knocking down an outside shot.
Idreanna Bargeron – Andrew Jackson | ’22
Idreanna is a speedy guard that applies full-court pressure on the ball for the entire game. She is good at setting her teammates up and creating her shot with athletic finishes around the basket. A lot of what she does on the court doesn’t show up in the stat book but is equally as important. She wreaks havoc on the defensive end creating deflections and disrupting the other team’s offensive flow. Idreanna’s energy on the floor creates winning plays and helped lead her team to a 2-0 record with wins over Orange Park and Terry Parker.
Jasmine Jackson – Andrew Jackson | ’22
Jasmine can score on all three levels but has the ability to set up her teammates for open shots. She is the leading scorer in a well-balanced offense for Jackson and looks to lead her team deeper in the playoffs this season. Jasmine also plays well on defense and gets a lot of deflections with her long arms. The Charleston Southern commit looks primed to end her high school career with a bang and is already off to a good start leading her team to a 2-0 start in the preseason. She and Idreanna Bargeron complement each other well in the backcourt.
Paetyn Miller Paetyn Miller 5'6" | CG Ridgeview | 2023 State FL – Ridgeview | ’23
Paetyn is a good facilitator and has a nice 3-point shot. She is a tough-nose defender and competes hard on every possession. She is one-half of a good shooting backcourt along with Alyssa Sherman that opens up the inside for sophomore Nia Blocton Nia Blocton 6'0" | PF Ridgeview | 2024 State FL to operate. She helped her team have a solid showing this preseason finishing with a 1-1 record.
Alyssa Sherman – Ridgeview | ’22
Alyssa is the leader of her team and is one-half of a good backcourt alongside Paetyn Miller Paetyn Miller 5'6" | CG Ridgeview | 2023 State FL . She does a little bit of everything for her team and leads by example. Alyssa has a good jump and is a nice passer which makes her tough to guard. She is also very solid on the defensive end.
