The Frisco Reedy Lions hosted and defeated the Frisco Heritage Coyotes 50-25 on Tuesday, and the Wylie East Raiders went on the road and earned a 67-42 victory over the Lovejoy Leopards on Friday. Here are some of the best guard prospects from this past week’s action.
Taylor Dailey | 2022 | 5’7’’ Shooting Guard | Wylie East HS – Dailey got off to a fast start on Friday, scoring 21 points in the first half before ultimately finishing the night with 25. She aggressively attacked the basket off the dribble and refused to be stopped, muscling her way through bodies and scoring through contact on numerous occasions. The senior two-guard made a couple of triples as well, showing off her confident stroke from the outside. On defense, Dailey looked to be consistently engaged and was opportunistic when jumping in front of passes for takeaways. This is a tough-nosed guard who is wired to score the basketball.
Adrianna McCoy | 2022 | 5’7’’ Combo Guard | Frisco Reedy HS – McCoy was tremendous when I saw her last season, and she did not disappoint this time around either. She has continued to improve her already polished game. The 2022 guard is great about getting to her spots in the mid-range area and converting off the dribble. Her cross-over is deadly and she understands how to utilize it. She also showcased good body control with some acrobatic finishes off the drive. Beyond that, McCoy’s passing was excellent on Tuesday. She was so good at anticipating double teams and getting the ball to the open player. Her ability to produce within the flow of the offense stood out too. This is one of the most skilled under-the-radar prospects in the DFW area.
Samantha Basson Samantha Basson 5'8" | PG Lovejoy | 2023 TX | 2023 | 5’8’’ Point Guard | Lovejoy HS – Basson was impressive despite her team suffering a 25-point loss on Friday. She ended the game with 10 points, four assists, and five steals. The Lovejoy junior is one of the most polished passers in her class. Don’t let that 4-assist stat fool you, because her assist numbers are going to get a huge boost at the next level once she is surrounded by more consistent shot-makers. She is the total package as a playmaker. Her vision, decision making, accuracy, instincts, and ability to manipulate are all outstanding. Additionally, she is a good three-point shooter off the dribble who is ready to fire when defenders sag off, as well as a confident ball handler vs. pressure. This is another underrated prospect who deserves more attention.
Aaliyah Halstied | 2023 | 5’5’’ Point Guard | Wylie East HS – Halstied is a terrific ball handler. She was constantly pressuring opposing defenders with the threat of a blow by, and exhibited her limitless motor in the process. The junior floor general is not the type to dribble the air out of the basketball as she surveys the defense, but instead keeps defenders on their heels. Moreover, she has a good-looking cross over move in her arsenal. Halstied’s team-first style of play was refreshing to watch, as she was always looking to get the ball to her teams’ two best scorers and did so in a variety of ways, ending the contest with seven assists.
Samantha Fields | 2023 | 5’5’’ Shooting Guard | Frisco Reedy HS – Fields is a fearless shooter with a short memory. She struggled out of the gates on Tuesday, but stayed with it, eventually knocking down a pair of catch-and-shoot threes near the end of the second quarter that gave Reedy a sizeable cushion heading into the half. The junior guard displayed good off-ball movement, a quick release, and the readiness to shoot whenever the ball found her on the perimeter. Fields also did a good job of turning the other team over with smart double-teams.
Vyanna Quezada | 2024 | 5’4’’ Combo Guard | Frisco Heritage HS – Quezada handled the ball comfortably against Frisco Reedy’s full court defense. She was excellent at drawing contact when slashing her way to the hoop and was smart about doing so during stretches of the game when her team was struggling from the field. She showed off her facilitating skills as well, highlighted by a picture-perfect assist while operating as the ball handler in a pick-and-roll. Furthermore, the sophomore combo guard looked comfortable at both guard spots but appeared to be more effective when playing the one spot.
