Whether it is the close proximity of Calhoun Falls Charter school to Georgia, how close fans attending Friday night’s games were to each other, distance-wise at the Blue Flashes’ basketball stadium, or how close the game between the Grizzlies and Blue Flashes was.
How close? One point close – and Calhoun Falls Charter was that one point better than High Point Academy by virtue of its 55-54 victory over the Grizzlies.
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand for the thrilling contest. Here are some noteworthy notes from Friday night.
Cade’s got it made
Jasmine Cade was a preseason SCBCA 1-A senior pick prior to regular season play commencing. In the closing moments of Friday night’s contest, she proved exactly why.
Trailing 54-53 with just over nine seconds to play, she was fouled, giving her an opportunity to drain two clutch shots from the free throw line. She made both tries, lifting the Blue Flashes to a 55-54 advantage.
The Grizzlies’ ensuing possession yielded no points, leading to jubilation and celebration from the Calhoun Falls Charter bench and crowd in attendance. Cade scored 11 points – eight in the second half.
The only poll that matters…
Prior to the game, a bit of news that both teams either did or did not pay attention to was revealed courtesy of the SCBCA.
In its latest 1A girls top 10 rankings, High Point Academy was ranked No. 4 with Calhoun Falls Charter at No. 7.
A promising start …
If the first quarter was any indication, High Point Academy was perhaps poised to depart from Calhoun Falls Charter with another victory.
The Grizzlies doubled up on the Blue Flashes, outscoring Calhoun Falls Charter in the first quarter 16-8. In that opening frame, High Point Academy was paced by six points (via a pair of 3-pointers) from Vivian Bracebridge Vivian Bracebridge 5'6" | SG High Point Academy | 2023 State SC and another five from KaDerrah Beason KaDerrah Beason 5'7" | SF High Point Academy | 2023 State SC .
Revenge is so sweet…
Friday night’s matchup between these two teams was a rematch of an earlier get-together that took place at High Point Academy in mid-December. When the triple zeroes had arrived at the conclusion of that contest, it was the Grizzlies prevailing by a final score of 45-33.
Top Performers
Anastasia Gillam Anastasia Gillam 5'3" | PG JL Mann | 2027 State SC led the way for the Blue Flashes with 23 points, leading all point-getters. Cade finished with 11. Autumn Thomas Autumn Thomas 5'5" | PG Calhoun Falls Charter | 2025 State SC added eight and Shamya Hudson scored seven.
As for the Grizzlies, Beason, who began the game on the bench, tallied 20 points. Olivia Martin Olivia Martin 6'0" | C High Point Academy | 2023 State SC added 13 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Bracebridge finished with 12 by virtue of the four 3-pointers she sank in the first and fourth quarters.
Records
The win ups Calhoun Falls Charter’s record to 9-1 while the defeat puts High Point Academy at 8-10 on the season. The Blue Flashes and Grizzlies are still atop the standings in Region 1-A play as both teams sport identical 7-1 records.
The next closest team to the Blue Flashes and Grizzlies? Southside Christian (5-5, 4-3) – who defeated High Point Academy in last season’s 1A playoffs to advance to the 1A state championship game with Military Magnet.
