2021-2022 Class 1A Honors

With the 2021-2022 season having concluded on Saturday, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 1A performed this year. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2025), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won’t see Freshmen in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 1A.   MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="97266" first="Ally" last="Madden"], 2022, 6-1 C, Blue River Valley H.S. Blue River Valley had not won a Sectional game since 2012, then in walked [player_tooltip player_id="97266" first="Ally" last="Madden"] as a Freshman. During her tenure, they rattled off four consecutive Regional appearances and one Regional Championship. She is quite possibly the most fundamental and crafty back-to-the-basket post in the state right now, regardless of class. She plays with physicality and an incredible motor, she’s willing to dive on the floor and play with reckless abandon, and she essentially outhustles her matchups each time out. Ally is committed to the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="97326" first="Mariah" last="Claywell"], 2022, 5-8 SG, Union City H.S. I chose Mariah for this award because of what she was up against this season. First, her backcourt running ’mate and classmate graduated a year early in 2021 as a Junior. Then, another classmate, and a huge interior presence in 6-2 post [player_tooltip player_id="243576" first="Emily" last="Livingston"], missed a number of games in the middle of their season. Still, the 5-8 do-everything wing was able to lead Union City to a 15-win season. She is a playmaker for teammates, plus she can score the basketball at all three levels. Mariah will play ball at Bethel University in Mishawaka, Indiana, next season. MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Caitlin Conn, 2022, 5-9 PF, North White H.S. Caitlin spent the last couple of seasons as a key reserve for North White, but this year an opportunity presented itself due to an injury to their best player, and Caitlin did more than step up; she was at times dominant. She is strong, physical, and incredibly hard-working with good bounce in her step. She runs the floor well, outworks her matchups regularly, and rebounds the ball extremely well. She more than doubled every statistical category from her Junior year to her Senior year, and she posted six double-doubles in a season that saw the Vikings win 20 games and make a Semi-State appearance. COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="326492" first="Mariah" last="Stoltzfus"], 2024, 5-2 PG, Bethany Christian School This is typically an award that goes to someone coming back from injury, and Mariah is a nice example of perseverance. She was injured and missed the first two months, with her first game of the 2021-2022 season being played in early January. The Lady Bruins were just 4-9 before that time, and while Stoltzfus wasn’t necessarily back at 100%, the Lady Bruins managed a 7-3 record after her return, including a win over a solid Bremen team, plus wins over Class 4A opponents Concord and Mishawaka. Her tough-nosed, competitive attitude is infectious, plus she’s highly skilled. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="295785" first="Carley" last="Barrett"], 2025, 5-9 SG, Lafayette Central Catholic H.S. When I listed Carley in the honorable mention section of the Preseason All-State teams, I didn’t know she’d have quite the impact she did this season. She was the Lady Knights’ second leading scorer on a team that just played Saturday in the Class 1A State Championship. She is a skillful wing who knows how to score the basketball, and at all three levels. She can make shots outside, but she’s so good attacking the basket and creating offense, for herself or teammates. She also showed the ability to rebound her position well. Look for her to step up into a much bigger leadership role next season.
