March is known for it’s big basketball games. Come win or go home time, what ball handlers do you want on your roster? I’m going to give you some players that I would want handling the rock in the biggest month of basketball.
* I didn’t include any players ranked in the top 10 of their class because of the obviousness of wanting some of them as ball handlers.
[player_tooltip player_id="147747" first="Brooke" last="Daniels"] (2022, PG, L’Anse Creuse North)
Daniels is dynamic with the ball. She’s fast in terms of both straight line speed and moving side to side with the ball. Daniels can manufacture buckets when it’s in her hands.
[player_tooltip player_id="186364" first="Alexandra" last="Kolnitys"] (2022, PG, Midland Dow)
When you’re the floor general on one of the top ranked teams in the state, you have to be able to handle the rock. It’s not about flash with Kolnitys, it’s about effectiveness. A turnover is a very rare thing for this emerging Miss Basketball candidate.
[player_tooltip player_id="178862" first="Mia" last="Riley"] (2022, PG, Fowler)
Riley is a top notch senior ball handler. She’s aggressive with the ball and likes to make plays while attacking the rim. Riley has the ability to get in the lane off the dribble and dish off to shooter as well as finish at the rim.
[player_tooltip player_id="253603" first="Sharon" last="Smith"] (2022, PG, Saginaw)
I’ve always really liked what Smith brings to the table as a perimeter player. She dribbles the ball quickly and has a quick first step off the bounce.
[player_tooltip player_id="190743" first="Dakota" last="Alston"] (2023, PG, Detroit Edison)
Alston pounds the ball off the floor and makes quick decisions with it. She can be counted on to get the ball where it needs to be and can create space with her handles.
[player_tooltip player_id="189295" first="McKenna" last="Macon"] (2023, PG, Mattawan)
Macon is as steady with the ball as steady can be. She’s so smart with the ball and can be an effective ball handler in so many situations. Macon excels with the ball in her hands in the middle of the court in transition.
[player_tooltip player_id="190710" first="Ava" last="Perry"] (2023, PG, Ann Arbor Skyline)
In my opinion, Perry is one of the most improved players in southeastern Michigan, and possibly the entire state. She’s been effective putting the ball on the floor, turning the corner and getting at the rim.
[player_tooltip player_id="189300" first="Shamya" last="Reid"] (2023, PG, Westfield Prep)
Reid is so slick and slippery with the ball in her hands. She has great hip movement off the dribble and seems to get the ball in the lane at will. Reid can handle at a high speed with effectiveness.
[player_tooltip player_id="244305" first="Hailey" last="Freshcorn"] (2024, PG, Onsted)
Freshcorn is the type of player that wants the ball in her hands in crunch time. She doesn’t over dribble, making every bounce have a purpose. I’ve seen Freshcorn beat pressure with the dribble time and time again.
[player_tooltip player_id="244275" first="Christian" last="Sanders"] (2024, PG, Detroit Renaissance)
Sanders is a high energy guard that seems to almost float with the ball when she’s putting it on the floor. She can shoot off the bounce and can create for herself and her teammates when attacking the defense.
