What was a 14-8 Trojans advantage after one quarter dwindled to two at 19-17 at half, then a Seahawks advantage of 27-25 after three quarters before James Island caught up and passed Hilton Head Island at the end.
Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to Hilton Head Island HS for Thursday evening’s matchup that may have implications concerning where both teams will stand in the playoff picture. Here are some notes and takeaways from what was a thrilling matchup between a pair of evenly matched teams.
Primetime Performers
Andrea Duncan Andrea Duncan 5'7" | PG James Island | 2024 State SC led all scorers with 18 points. In addition to being a scorer, she is also a distributor of the ball but will attack the rim. She will absorb contact and get to the free throw line and will grab rebounds in addition. Duncan can organize an offense in the halfcourt and understands her role as a go-to scorer.
Tiana Graf Tiana Graf 5'6" | SG James Island | 2025 State SC just a freshman added nine points. She is another who will shoot 3-pointers in addition deflecting passes on defense to affect an opposing team’s passing lanes. Graf made a pair of important free throws near the conclusion of the game that all but sealed the Trojans’ victory.
For the Seahawks, Lynda Young Lynda Young 5'9" | PF Hilton Head Island | 2024 State SC led her team’s scoring efforts with 14 points while coming off the bench. She provides an interior presence for Hilton Head and bolsters the Seahawks’ offensive output with both her scoring as well as her rebounding. Young can also absorb contact and get to the free throw line. She displays her versatility as someone who can play as a guard while primarily playing as a forward, but can handle the ball as if she were a one or two.
Deja Godsun also aided the Seahawks’ efforts with a 10-point effort – also off the bench. She is a primary point guard for Hilton Head Island and can quickly recover in case of a miscue. Godsun will shoot 3-pointers, draw contact and head to the free throw line, can attack the rim and will deflect passes on defense, impacting an opponent’s passing efforts.
Seahawks Seniors
Games such as this – the final one of the regular season are always watershed moments for senior athletes. Coach Russell Raniszewski’s Hilton Head Island team has several seniors graduating including Anna Genova, Alex Fisher, Gianna Timko, Hope Dobbelaere and .
State of the Teams
The victory for the Trojans means coach Emily Beyoglides’ team has won four of its last six games. James Island has also won eight games in its region – only Bluffton at its perfect 12-0 record has more. The Seahawks’ defeat snaps a three-game winning streak.
January 18
That day was the last matchup that took place between James Island and Hilton Head Island. Of course, the scene was the home of the Trojans, but the result favored the Seahawks as they earned a 46-44 victory. This, of course, means both teams got their wins on the opposing school’s floor this year in their season series with each other.
Records
James Island’s record is ran up to 11-14, but the Islanders have appeared to play their best ball in Region 7-AAAA competition as shown by its 8-4 record. Hilton Head Island now stands at 10-12 with a 5-6 region showing.
