It was a banner occasion for coach Kenny Conroy’s Eagles as Hilton Head Christian made it four consecutive SCISA 2A championships by virtue of its 45-34 victory over the Indians.
As the SCISA season comes to a close, Hilton Head Christian will conclude 2021-22 with a record of 25-2 plus a mark of 8-0 in Region 4-AA. As for the Indians, their season ends at 20-3 as they too went a perfect 8-0 against Region 1-AA adversaries.
Hilton Head Christian’s journey to a fourth consecutive SCISA championship would see the Eagles dispatch Williamsburg Academy and Greenwood Christian before being locked in a relatively close matchup with another flock of Eagles – those from Palmetto Christian. Hilton Head Christian defeated Palmetto Christian in a 32-21 result to clinch a berth in Saturday’s championship game.
As for Orangeburg Prep, its trek to the state championship game began with a victory over Carolina Academy before following that up with a victory over John Paul II. The win over the Golden Warriors was significant as it was career victory No. 700 for coach Jan Stoudenmire. The Indians then defeated Beaufort Academy with the score being 57-23 ensuring its spot in Saturday’s title matchup.
The Indians were hoping to deliver victory No. 702 for its coach – and things were looking promising for Orangeburg Prep 16 minutes in as they took a 19-14 lead into halftime.
“It’s a great group of girls that worked real hard this year,” Conroy said. “They played some very difficult competition to prepare themselves for that. So, even when we were down, we knew we were still in it.”
And the Eagles were still in it because of the second half scoring binge Tamya Hutchinson Tamya Hutchinson 5'4" | PG Hilton Head Christian | 2024 State SC embarked on. A transfer from nearby Estill, the star ex-Gator capped off her first season wearing the Hilton Head Christian colors with a 13-point showing. Eleven of her 13 were scored in the second half.
“I’m sure she’s excited now to start AAU and get back in the gym and get ready for next year,” Conroy said.
Also instrumental in the Eagles’ bid to cut down the nets at Sumter County Civic Center was Skylar Smith Skylar Smith 5'8" | SG Hilton Head Christian | 2022 State SC . After the senior was kept off the scoreboard in the first quarter, she also contributed 13 points to Hilton Head Christian’s efforts. The Eagles knocked down four 3-pointers for the game – three of which left Smith’s hands.
Abby Peduzzi Abby Peduzzi 5'9" | SF Hilton Head Christian | 2023 State SC also had herself a game. She scored nine points – including making four of her six free throw attempts. Peduzzi also had the other made triple for Hilton Head Christian.
Instrumental in the Eagles win was outdoing the Indians on the scoreboard 20-4 in the third quarter.
Orangeburg Prep was paced by 16 points courtesy of its star guard and forward Campbell Elizabeth Delaney Campbell Elizabeth Delaney 5'7" | SF Orangeburg Prep | 2023 State SC . She dropped 14 of her 16 in the first half. Included in that 16 was her going a perfect four for four from the free throw line with all of her attempts from the charity stripe occurring in the first quarter. Delaney was also called for two personal fouls and had eight of the 10 points the Indians scored in the first quarter.
Katherine Lambrecht (2022) scored eight points for the Indians. Out of those eight, six of those came in the second half of play. Lambrecht also was only called for two personal fouls. Her fourth quarter scores included a made 3-pointer and a made free throw.
Ryn Grubbs (2022) scored seven points in what was her final game wearing Orangeburg Prep red. Grubbs provided a second half boost for the Indians as all seven of her points occurred in the third and fourth quarters.
Skylar Smith Skylar Smith 5'8" | SG Hilton Head Christian | 2022 State SC , Lily Chase and Mackenzie Butter are the three Eagles seniors that will be graduating. Orangeburg Prep will graduate Cate Fogle, Laine Grubbs, Ryn Grubbs, Anna Plummer, Anna Beth Lambrecht and Isabelle Wassell as part of the 2022 senior class.
