GEICO Nationals is back in Ft. Myers, FL for the 2022 High Schools Nationals tournament at Florida SouthWestern College. The girls bracket will feature 5 teams for the first time ever, and 4 of the 5 teams participating will be making their first trip to GEICO Nationals. New Hope (MD) is making their second appearance as they won it all in 2019. In Game One, IMG Academy (FL) took down Bishop McNamara (MD) by a score of 67-48. Here are the players who stood out on Day One:
[player_tooltip player_id="32623" first="Grace" last="VanSlooten"] | 6’3 F | 2022
B Mac had no answer for Grace’s size and length. She was able to do just about anything she wanted inside, and she can stretch the floor with her shooting and ability to bring it up the court. VanSlooten has really impressive footwork, controls the boards, and is very strong at the rim. The Oregon commit had no problem stepping outside to hit a three, and she had a really nice double clutch move at the basket for a bucket. Grace finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists.
[player_tooltip player_id="91558" first="Kailyn" last="Gilbert"] | 5’8 G | 2022
KG did everything in their opening round win. She had some nasty dishes and saw the floor very well. The Arizona commit was too strong and her handles were too much for the McNamara defense. Her mid-range and pull-up game are going to translate very well at the next level. Kailyn finished with 15 points, 8 boards, and 6 assists.
[player_tooltip player_id="406841" first="T’yana" last="Todd"] | 5’11 G | 2022
TT has a lot of length and was able to shoot over the shorter players from B Mac with her high release point. She’s a really underrated piece for this IMG team that hadn’t played in 65 days. T’yana finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.
[player_tooltip player_id="243981" first="Gabby" last="Anderson"] 5’10 G | 2022
The Harvard commit was all over the glass on both ends of the floor. She crashed the boards and was tough around the hoop. I was really impressed with her mid-range game, too. Gabby finished with 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists.
[player_tooltip player_id="238689" first="Madisen" last="McDaniel"] 5’7 G | 2024
The Sophomore finished well with both hands at the rim with her moves to get to the basket and strength. B Mac’s guard play is some of the best in the country. Madisen finished with 15 points and 5 assists.
[player_tooltip player_id="137208" first="Gia" last="Cooke"] | 5’8 G | 2022
The Texas A&M commit showed off her speed, athleticism, and bounce in Game One. She showcased really clean handles and strength to finish at the rim. Gia finished with 9 points and 6 boards.
[player_tooltip player_id="25571" first="Yonta" last="Vaughn"] 5’7 G | 2022
The West Virginia commit went 4 for 7 from beyond the arc which showed why she was the best shooter in the building. Yonta finished with 12 points.
[player_tooltip player_id="142828" first="Qadence" last="Samuels"] | 6’1 G | 2023
The Junior didn't have her best shooting performance, but she contributed in a ton of ways. She has really good length and is definitely a player that can contribute at the D1 level. Qadence finished with 7 points and 7 boards.
