A litany of travel teams featuring talents from South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia all made the trip to Cabarrus County for what was two days of exciting basketball as the 2022 AAU season enters its beginning stages.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the trip up to Carolina Courts for the Saturday slate of games. Here is a look at who stood out among the classes of 2022 and 2023 from the Palmetto State.
Ashley Farmer Ashley Farmer 5'6" | PG Clover | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Charlotte Dream Elite 17U – Clover HS – It had to be a sight for sore eyes for many a South Carolina hoops fan to see this star veteran’s sneakers make contact with a basketball court once again. Farmer came on said court off the bench in Charlotte Dream Elite 17U’s matchup with North Carolina-based Lady Attack Elite 17U Morris on Saturday morning and drained a 3-pointer shortly afterwards. She also provided defensive help for her team. As of today, Farmer remains unsigned and was part of coach Sherher Hopkins’ 2020-21 Eagles rendition that won a SCHSL 5A state championship.
KaDerrah Beason KaDerrah Beason 5'7" | SF High Point Academy | 2023 State SC – 2023 – High Point Academy – KST Academy 17U – Coach Ron White managed to land two of the Grizzlies’ top-tier junior talents in Beason as well as Vivian Bracebridge Vivian Bracebridge 5'6" | SG High Point Academy | 2023 State SC . She is fresh off a trip to the 1A state finals. There are many things one can count on with Beason on the court – including lots of scoring, lots of rebounds and plenty of shots being blocked. KST Academy 17U closed out Saturday’s slate of games against ABC Lightning and Beason scored 10 points – eight of which occurred in the first half of play. Beason also managed to keep herself out of foul trouble as she was only called for one personal throughout the contest.
Lindsay Garner Lindsay Garner 6'2" | C Lexington | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Lexington HS – ABC Lightning – Garner is also coming off a stellar season that saw her Wildcats come within one win of the 5A Lower State Finals against Summerville. Garner is tall and athletic. As is conventional with bigs, she puts plenty of points on the scoreboard and is difficult to contend with on the glass. Garner will also hustle to save balls from going out of bounds and maintain possession for her team. She poured in 10 points in ABC Lightning’s win over North Carolina’s Lady Attack Elite 17U Johnson and finished with nine in a 56-49 victory besting KST Academy 17U.
S’Moriyah Rice – 2023 – KST Academy – Byrnes HS – Speaking of KST Academy, she had herself a “not how you start, but how you finish” performance to close out the Saturday card of games when her team took on ABC Lightning. Rice was nice with 11 points – all 11 being tallied in the second half. She will take opportunities from behind the arc and drained a couple of them in the matchup’s closing stanza. Rice runs the floor well and can get out in transition. She will also find herself at the right place at the right time on many occasions on the court and plays with a high basketball IQ.
Leah Page Leah Page 5'9" | CG Gaffney | 2023 State SC – 2023 – KST Academy – Gaffney HS – Page is plenty of the rage among Gaffney Indians fans. She showcased how she can score from anywhere on the floor when KST Academy took on ABC Lightning to close out Saturday’s docket of contests. In addition to how she can score, Page is also an efficient distributor of the ball, wins a great deal of rebounding battles, can force opponents to turn the ball over with her defensive play and displays overall versatility. Page had 18 points in the game with ABC Lightning to lead all KST Academy scorers that matchup.
Kiara Wilson Kiara Wilson 5'5" | PG Battery Creek | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Battery Creek HS – H2 Lowco 16U – H2 Lowco’s 16U team is part of the upcoming Prep Girls Hoops Circuit, so we will see plenty of Wilson and the rest of her team throughout the 2022 AAU season. Wilson is a defensive anchor who can also put up her fair share of points in addition to the steals she can collect. She is listed at 5-foot-5, but will also grab a good number of rebounds. Wilson was one of H2 Lowco 16U’s starters in its game with North Carolina-based Warriors Life Elite and she scored 10 points in what was a commanding victory.
